    Erik Sietsema|Dec 20, 2017

When I was in school, I was a poor student all the way up until I went to seminary, where I was a straight ‘A’ student for the first 3 years. It started as a point of pride for me, then it became a challenge to maintain it, and finally it made me miserable. I had done so well that I was afraid of messing it up. I reached a point where I obsessed over grades and put in excessive hours on papers just trying to maintain my perfect record. I eventually encountered a class that I struggled with, and, after several difficult tests, finished with a ‘B...

  • The 2017 U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree...the rest of the story

    Steve Edwards|Dec 20, 2017

Reporter's note: Since learning the 2017 U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree would come from the Kootenai Forest in western Montana I've been following the story. When my wife and I lived in Libby I was a seasonal employee in the Kootenai Forest for several summers. I still have friends who work there and I was hoping I could get some nuggets of information about the national tree that might not otherwise be available. • Feeding the Reindeer

    Jenna Leader|Dec 20, 2017

As a child making a tasty and, of course, sweet treat for the reindeer did not happen every year, but the years it did happen were the most memorable. My grandma, cousins and I would mix oatmeal, sugar and sprinkles together to put out in the snow for the reindeer on the night of Christmas Eve. Then they, too, would get a snack on their long ride around the world. Waking up on Christmas morning was so exciting, but it also was a marathon. For instance, it was very important to be the first one to wake up, but it was also so important to check...

  • At the Base of the Mountains

    Jasmine Generous|Dec 20, 2017

Christmas in rural areas is more than the gifts lying under the tree, or the lights strung down Main Street. The material items are diminished as the people come together as a family: we remember those we have lost since the last eve, we support the organizations that hold the town together like glue, and we praise the glory above. The hardships that our daily lives hold are forgotten as we step into our city halls and feel the essence of joy that is in the air. As his wife rubs Aquaphor lotion into his hands, he winces; the cold nights have...

  • My Answer

    Dr. Billy Graham|Dec 20, 2017

Q: I have an aggressive form of cancer, and the doctors have told me this will be my last Christmas. I feel so sad, especially when I think about not seeing my grandchildren grow up. What would you say to someone in my situation? A: The most important thing I can say to you is that God knows all about your situation, and He loves you and will always be with you—even when your way seems dark. God’s promise is true: “The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you. … Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged” (Deuteronomy 31:8). How do I...
