  • The Gift of the Magi

    Dec 20, 2023

ONE DOLLAR AND eighty-seven cents. That was all. And sixty cents of it was in pennies. Pennies saved one and two at a time by bulldozing the grocer and the vegetable man and the butcher until one’s cheeks burned with the silent imputation of parsimony that such close dealing implied. Three times Della counted it. One dollar and eighty-seven cents. And the next day would be Christmas. There was clearly nothing to do but flop down on the shabby little couch and howl. So Della did it. Which instigates the moral reflection that life is made up of s...

How Do We Improve Percent Calf Crop Weaned? Percent calf-crop weaned is of paramount economic importance in a cow-calf operation. Selection, mating and management to improve reproductive efficiency are all important areas to improve percent calf-crop weaned. From a standpoint of genetics and animal breeding, reproductive traits are low in heritability (typically 10% - 20%) but show high levels of heterosis in response to crossbreeding. If a producer is going to take advantage of heterosis in one part of the commercial cow-calf operation, take...

  • Music filled the night-Elementary Concert

    Zoe Merrill|Dec 20, 2023

It's always the same. A wonderful celebration of Christmas is the Elementary Christmas Concert. This year was the biggest turnout. The auditorium was almost full. It started with the 4th-grade class playing recorders. They played Good King Wenceslas and Snowfall. The 5th grade band, in their very first concert, played Go Tell Aunt Rhody, A Mozart Melody, and Jingle Bells. Every student in the 5th grade must play in the band, so it's a delightful concert with squeaks and squawks. The 6th-grade...

  • Thoughts with Zoe

    Zoe Merrill|Dec 20, 2023

Christmas 2023 I can’t help but stop my hectic life and think about what I need to do for Christmas. Once again, I didn’t get decorations up, once again, no letters, no Christmas cookies, and I still don’t have all my presents bought. But I have spent more time this year preparing my heart for Christmas’s meaning. Richard Foster is one of my favorite writers. His book Celebration of Discipline remains a compelling book for me. The first sentence says, “ Superficiality is the curse of our age.” My faith affects all my relationships with my fam...

  • Patching Cracks

    Erik Sietsema|Dec 20, 2023

Christian author, Jeanette Lockerbie once shared an anecdote about her daughter: “Four-year-old Martha, hugging a doll in each of her pudgy little arms, looked wistfully up at her mother and said, “Mamma, I love them and love them and love them, but they never love me back.” I came across this passage while preparing for Advent sermons this year. It stood out to me because little Martha’s love for her dolls demonstrates something powerful for us about God’s incredible love for us at Christmas. Our natural bent toward sin and ignoring God outri...

Sophomore Leah LePennit wrestled strong and showed continued improvement over las...

  • Lady Pioneers win twice in battles

    Dec 20, 2023

Travis Baumann, Head Coach wanted to recognize the JV’s efforts “We started the day off with the JV girls playing an excellent game. They passed the ball very well on offense, and played aggressive defense. It was an amazing game to be a part of. It was one of the best games I have witnessed so it truly was amazing to be on the bench with Coach Jurenka to witness it. They were led on both offense and defense by Alex Worral who had a monster game, and it was a foretelling of how she was to play all weekend.” The Lady Pioneers had a great weeke...

  • Pioneer boys will continue to work hard

    Dec 20, 2023

The Pioneer boys had a tough weekend, losing both games, but there was a lot of light in both games, and some positive things happened. They still fought hard, and battled until the very end. They started the weekend against Cascade, then turned around and played Turner the next night. The first quarter started great for the Pioneers, with Lane Demontiney knocking down a 3-pointer and the Pioneers applying their ¾ court pressure. Lane also had a great take and another deep 3-pointer to...

Mary’s Little Lamb Daycare Hi Santa, My name is Luke Terry and I am 4 year old. I have been good thisyear but sometimes a little bit naughty, is that ok? I do help my sister carry heavy rocks and I can fix broken toys. Some other nice things I do are helping my papa get snakes and sharing my toys with him! Papa has been good this year too. For Christmas could you please bring me a toy train and maybea rabbit? I think my mom and dad want a new 4-wheeler and Ty wants a rope so he can rope calves. I will ask my mom to leave you out some c...
