Jim Knight, MSU Extension Wildlife Specialist (retired) explained a 2003 article why feeding deer is a poor practice The compete article is available at https://bit.ly/3uU6JRa. Different micro-organisms help digest diffe...

  • Letter to the Editor

    Dec 21, 2022

With the end of the year fast approaching, there is still time to make those tax-deductible donations. Donating to a worthy nonprofit organization or group is a great way to give back and support them for doing good work for our community. One local and worthy nonprofit organization is Big Sandy Medical Services Foundation. It was established in 1989 to foster better healthcare in the Big Sandy community and to support Big Sandy Medical Center. They sponsor scholarships to encourage and assist young people who are pursuing training in the...

  • Joyful Christmas Concert

    Zoe Merrill|Dec 21, 2022

My favorite concert lived up to my excitement. Big Sandy's Elementary School concert is always my favorite. It started with the 4th graders playing Cool Christmas tree on their recorders. Music Teacher TJ Bonds introduced them by saying parents might not appreciate their children's practicing, but the recorders teach valuable music basics. Next was the 5th-grade band for their first-ever concert. They played three songs: March Steps, A Mozart Melody (Twinkle Twinkle Little Star—I didn't know that was a Mozart song), and Jingle Bells. Fifth g...

  • Local Churches having Chrsitmas Services

    Erik Sietsema|Dec 21, 2022

Christmas Day is fast approaching and the various churches in the community are preparing to celebrate the birth of Jesus. The holiday lands on a Sunday this year, which raises questions as to whether or not local congregations will be holding Sunday services. I visited with the pastors in Big Sandy and here’s what I learned. Pastor Rich Jesperson, of Grace Lutheran Church did a great job of summarizing this season of worship and our invitations to the community to join us in celebrating the birth of Christ. “There are two major festivals of th...

  • Patching Cracks

    Erik Sietsema|Dec 21, 2022

I spent the majority of last week studying the history of Christmas and the Bible’s account of the angels announcing Jesus’ coming to Mary and Joseph. Every time I drill deep into the story of Mary and Joseph, I find myself taken aback by what was taking place. First, the story of Christmas itself is the story of God looking at us and realizing that we will never manage to climb the ladder of perfection that is required to reach Him. So, He chose to come down to us. Many people find Christianity difficult, because they assume that it req...

  • LaBuda Takes 5th at Holiday Classic

    Tucker Taylor|Dec 21, 2022

The Pioneer Wrestlers competed well over the weekend. On Thursday night they went a combined 10-2 as a team at the Fort Benton Mixer. The next morning kicked off the CMR Holiday Classic where the team continued to show their grit on the mat. At 103 pounds, Quinn Rodewald finished in the top ten with a 3-2 record. He battled hard throughout the two day tournament, only losing to the eventual champion Tristan Vladic of Billings Senior and third place finisher Makael Aguayo of Billings West. At...

  • Big Sandy battled against Fort Benton and pulled away with a win in conference play 58-47

    Dec 21, 2022

The Pioneers started, ready to play. The boys hustled hard on defense, with excellent ball pressure and high hands in a half-court press. Fort Benton struggled to set up any offense and turned the ball over several times in the first quarter. Big Sandy had great ball movement and got some great offensive plays from several players. Braydon Cline had a great pass to Wylie Snapp, who finished with a bucket and one. Kody Strutz and Isaac Pedraza had some great drives to the basket and some great...

  • Big Sandy girls fall to Fort Benton 57-41

    Dec 21, 2022

Lady Pioneers, plagued by injury and illness, fall short against the Lady Longhorns 57-41. The Lady Pioneers had a different starting five against the number two team in the district, but that didn't stop them from giving it all they had. The Lady Longhorns began with a half-court trap to try and make the Lady Pioneers make poor decisions with the ball, but that didn't stop Big Sandy from making good passes and excellent ball movement. Fort Benton opened up with three 3- pointers and some great...

  • Pages from the Mountaineer at Christmas time

    Erik Sietsema|Dec 21, 2022

On December 7th, the nation observed Pearl Harbor day. It’s an easy observance to miss in the mix of Christmas shopping and work days. As I was preparing to research Christmases past as covered by the Mountaineer, I found myself thinking about how close the surprise attack lands to the Christmas season. This prompted a thorough dive into the Mountaineer archives from 1941. The first issue of the paper to come out after the attack was on December 11th, giving local editors three to four days to react to the news. At the time, newspaper c...
