Many people have wondered about the current status of the fundraising campaign for the new pool in Big Sandy. The New Pool Committee has been awaiting the outcome of some grant requests before posting the latest news, and now we have an update for the community. In early December, we received news of the following grant awards: $7,000 from the Catholic Church Women from the Fall Harvest Festival $5,000 from the Lippard/Clawiter Foundation $20,000 from the Tordik Wildlife Foundation $117,637...
By Erik Sietsema If you Google “Why do we celebrate Christmas on December 25th,” you’ll get a slew of answers associated with a handful of popular theories. It is easy to just pick one and go with it, but this approach felt kind of uncomfortable to me. Many hours later, I have a rough answer, which is way too long. I also have an excess of background knowledge on all of the popular theories. If I address them all here, the article would be excessively long and most people will give up long before they find out the answer. I will dig into the b...
Dry Matter Losses of Hay from Field to Feeding This article was written by Dennis Cash, retired MSU Extension Service forage specialist. Winter feeding is likely your single largest ranch expense. Reducing hay waste can save you money. Hay losses at feeding on most ranches averages about one fourth, but can easily approach half. During good haying conditions and with proper storage, most losses to alfalfa or alfalfa-grass hays can be minimized. Dense large round or rectangular bales are widely used, but significant losses occur when these are s...
November was a busy month at the Big Sandy Library. After school and on Fridays with the kids. Our weekly activities include Power Hour, which is everyday afterschool until 5:00pm. This is when kids can come down and use our computers or just use the wifi for their computers to do their homework. There is always someone to help if they need it. Robotics Club meets every Tuesday at 4pm-5pm, Lego Club is every Friday at 11am- noon and story time for the toddlers every Wednesday at 10:30am. There were also other fun things mixed in. The month of N...
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from all the staff at BSMC. The holiday season is never short of celebration, joy, and commotion at the medical center. The HR Director, Karma Hale, along with her helpers put on a wonderful Christmas Party at the Mint for all staff. It was a joyful event with great food, good company, and a healthy dose of laughter. Inside the facility, the Activities Director, Lisa Sipler, does a fantastic job getting everyone into the Christmas Spirit, staff, and residents alike. This season was no different. Shortly...
Lately, I have been having an overwhelming feeling (in a good way) to praise God. I want you to feel this feeling of joy and peace too! So keep reading! So let's talk about what people do for a "new year." We talk about getting in shape, losing weight, and eating healthy. We make goals to spend less time on our electronic devices. We make goals to spend more time with our spouses or children. We try to reconnect with someone. What about our relationship with God? Do we tend to seek Him only when we feel down or need help or when we need Him to...
The Pioneers had more of a challenge from the Thunderbirds to start their game but won 53-40. The Pioneers started in a 3/4 press and had excellent ball pressure to make the Thunderbirds make a couple of turnovers. Big Sandy started in a high-low offense and had great ball movement. They had several great offense sets coming from Strutz with a 3-pointer, Galbavy with a post move, Cline with a long 3-pointer, and Strutz with a couple of steals and a Pedraza steal, putting the Pioneers up 3 going into the 2nd quarter. The second quarter was a lot...
It all started with Mary. Since then, the expectation has been that women do everything central to Xmas. The men may bring gifts, I say may, but that’s pretty much it. Oh yes, I hear a man yelling as he sets up the Xmas tree. Well, sometimes you don’t. I know. My experience and a lifetime of hearing other women, older and younger, tell me the Xmas story. The Xmas story is carried on from woman to woman. She is the one to send cards, bake numerous goodies, get in groceries to feed the hungry armies, decorate, buy and wrap gifts, and vol...
6th Grade “Twas the day before break, when all through the halls, All the students were anxiously climbing the walls; The lockers were open- kids combing their hair, In hopes that some snowflakes would soon fill the air; Kids were excited to sleep late in their beds, While visions of carefree days danced in their heads: With people in the office and I in my class, We just settled down and let our brains rest at last, When outside the room there arose such a clatter, I sprang from my chair to see what was the matter. When I went out in the hall...
If you have watched any of the Hallmark Christmas movies, as I have, you will notice a pattern very quickly. The story begins with a problem, be it a person’s job, boyfriend/girlfriend/ lack of money, etc. The movie then slowly twists and turns until you get the perfect Christmas ending. Good people get rewards and live happily ever after, along with perfect Christmas decorations and gifts. I have read about why we watch. It awakens the hopeful child in all of us that wish for a happy ending in life. The story I am about to tell is like a H...
