  • The Tale of daddy goat and the two little goats

    Ann Denning|Nov 4, 2020

Around and about two years ago, I decided we must get two baby goats. I had seen cute videos, and our farrier's wife was selling them. Two good reasons, they are Pygmy Dwarf goats who came to us tiny and now have big bellies but are still short. For some unknown reason, the song 'Cisco Kid" by War began playing in my head. If you have never heard this song, you must check it out. In it, it says Cisco drank the whiskey, Pancho drank the wine. Well, one little guy certainly struck me as a Cisco....

  • Mountianeer featured artist; Tana Rai Faltrino

    Zoe Merrill|Oct 14, 2020

I first saw Tana Rai Faltrino's art when her cousin Gay Pearson showed me a picture of her granddaughter with a horse that she had. I thought it captured the moment wonderfully. She lives in Havre. Tana grew up on a farm and ranch south of Havre. She was encouraged by her mother and the nuns at St. Judes School to continue to draw and paint. Tana studied painting and Art History at NMC. Another cousin Donna Jenkins, of Big Sandy and Tana, coauthored together a cookbook, Montana Legacy of Love...

  • THE TALE OF THE ELUSIVE GUINEA HEN

    Ann Denning|Sep 2, 2020

I have never had a Guinea., never particularly aspired to have a Guinea, but a Guinea I have. Enter Henrietta into our lives! She has said her name is Henrietta, but since learning how flighty she is, I doubt we can trust her word. However, we will give her the benefit of the doubt. While feeding the horses one morning, we spotted Guinea strolling around with the horses, pecking up bits of feed. Where did she come from? We felt sure she'd skedaddle back to where she came, but this did not...

  • Important Story: Cornelia Knottnerus

    Researched by Zoe Merrill|Jul 8, 2020

Researched by Zoe Merrill Editor’s note: Our lives make a difference. The Big Sandy Mountaineer should be about collecting stories from the people in the Big Sandy area. When I was told about Cornelia Knottnerus, after her death, I was reminded how important it is to get other’s stories. This woman lived in Big Sandy for many years and I would have loved to listen to her talk about her life. I would like to talk to you about yours. I listened to the Corrie’s whole oral history, over an hour long. I took notes but the following intro...

  • TALES OF OLD BIG SANDY "Sex, Drugs, Rock n' Roll and Lawrence Green: How I Survived the 1970's"

    Steve Sibra|Jun 10, 2020

Like a lot of people, I have fond and nostalgic memories of my high school days. Well, at least I have memories. I can't even estimate how many people I know these days who say they can't remember anything that went on in high school. And some of them graduated this century! For whatever reason, I have pretty clear memories of those days. That is not to say they are accurate, or fair and balanced. But I do remember. I graduated from BSHS in 1974. I didn't work as hard as I should have in...

  • How the Prairie Anemone Got its Fur Coat

    Author Unknown|Apr 29, 2020

Editor's note. The early spring flower the crocus gets its name from the English. The French called it the pasque flower. While prairie children called it the gosling. The Indians had a "perfect" name for it, 'Ears of the Earth'. The following is a story from tradition. Wapee shivered and dew his robe tighter about him. It was cold there on the hillside, but the shiver was more of fear and loneliness than of cold. Always before he had slept in the tipi of his parents, where his father could...

  • Thanksgiving in Montana comes with rich dollop of history

    Tom Cook Montana Historical Society|Dec 4, 2019

Published in the Missoulian Nov 28, 2013 By its very definition, Thanksgiving means that we should look back on the past as we gather together with family and friends. The first recorded Thanksgiving in what became Montana took place in the isolated mining town of Bannack in 1863, shortly after President Abraham Lincoln had established it as a national observance. In the rough and tumble mining community, what people wanted to be thankful for was gold, and most were too busy looking for it to take time out to have much more than a helping of...

  • River Ramblings North

    Gay Pearson|Nov 13, 2019

There are many homesteads here at Pearson Ranch along the beautiful picturesque Missouri River. The Johnson's, Bakers, Coopers, among many other names, lost in the sands of time. There are no longer existing homesteads, just humps of dirt where sod shanties were or holes that were root cellars or storage for steamboats passing through. A few covered cisterns still exist in school sections where country schools stood. The Kabo school was on our ranch, my brother Jack and I were the last...
