Precautions before Grazing Alfalfa and Cover Crops • All producers should use a bloat block and expose the cattle to the bloat block in the pasture shortly before putting them onto a cover crop or alfalfa field. Seven days prior is a good rule of thumb. The bloat blocks can be placed in their salt tub. • Make sure the cattle are full before letting them out on to the alfalfa or cover crop. • Test the crops and weeds for nitrates (cereal grains, kochia, turnips and radishes). Turnips and radishes seem to have the highest nitrates of the cover...

Steph’s Pics This week Steph has chosen “FUDGE CUPCAKE MURDER” by Joanne Fluke. For bakery owner Hannah Swenson, life in Lake Eden, Minnesota, seems to be lacking a certain flavor. It is not that she doesn’t enjoy teaching a weekly “Potluck Cooking” class at the community outreach center, or that she is not excited about her sister Andrea’s bun in the oven---------watching the very pregnant Andrea try to sit on a stool at the Cookie Jar is worth it every time., Maybe it is this year’s sheriff’s election that has got her down. For years Sheriff...

  • Getting By

    Janell Barber|Aug 30, 2017

Does your child refuse to eat certain foods because of its color or texture, or, even, no reason at all? Not to worry. It is quite common for children ages 2-5 and is temporary. As long as he or she is growing and has plenty of energy, they are most likely eating enough to be healthy. If you have concerns, talk to your child’s doctor. Here are some tips to help with your child’s selective eating behaviors. *Let your child pick out fruits and vegetables at the store. *Have your child help you prepare meals. This helps them to learn about foo...

  • At The Library

    Robert Lucke, BSM Reporter|May 24, 2017

This week Vicki picked a book called “HALF THE SKY” by the husband and wife team of Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn. “HALF THE SKY “is a call to arms. A call for help. A call for contributions but also it is a call for volunteers. It asks us to open our eyes to this enormous humanitarian issue. It does so with exquisitely crafted prose and sensationally interesting material. One reviewer says that it is one of the most important books ever reviewed. From the first married couple to win a Pulitzer Prize for journalism, here is a passion...

  • Patching Cracks

    Erik Seitsma|May 24, 2017

At the midpoint of World War 1, a stalemate had set in. Both sides had established lines of trenches, protected by barbed wire and machine gun nests. This resulted in an unfortunate strategy where soldiers would rush across the field of “No Man’s Land”, into enemy gunfire, and attempt to dislodge enemy troops from the opposing trench. Often, successfully captured trenches were recaptured as the soldiers in the surrounding trenches sent troops to drive out the enemy and recapture positions. Essentially, both sides sat across the lines from...

  • A Simple Spring Cleaning Checklist

    Mar 15, 2017

(StatePoint) It’s the time of year to roll up your sleeves and do some spring cleaning. Experts point out that it’s helpful to streamline the tools you use to do the job and the tasks you seek to accomplish. “An all-purpose cleaner and a tough degreasing agent can be used in so many areas of the home,” says Jeff Devlin, a licensed contractor who’s appeared on several home improvement television shows. Devlin’s first tip: look to reduce the number of products in your cleaning arsenal. “Along with high-quality sprays and cloths, I use one all-p...

  • Patching Cracks

    Erik Sietsema|Feb 22, 2017

For a few years after the death of his wife and mother, Theodore Roosevelt ran a cattle ranch on North Dakota. Early in his venture, another rancher tried to strong arm the future president from his land, going so far as sending a hired gunman and his gang to the homestead in an attempt at intimidation. Theodore wasn’t home at the time and the thugs left after issuing a warning that they would murder him next time they saw him. When Teddy heard about the visit, he rode directly to the gunman’s home, knocked on his door, and when the man ans...

  • My Answer

    Dr. Billy Graham|Feb 8, 2017

Q: Why can’t families get along? My five siblings and I got together for Christmas dinner this year, and all we did was argue. I’m afraid we hardly ever have contact. This concerns me, but I guess it’s just been easier to go our separate ways. A: What’s easiest isn’t always what’s best, of course, nor is it always God’s will (in fact, it usually isn’t). I’m thankful you’re concerned about the divisions in your family—and I want to assure you that God is even more concerned than you are. Conflicts like this are never His will. Tragically, fam...

  • Bee Lucke and C.L. Stuart and the January Caper

    Robert C. Lucke, BSM News|Jan 25, 2017

Bee Lucke was the son of Havre pioneer Lou Lucke. He loved Clear Creek almost as much as his father had. He was blessed for his father-in-law C. L. Stuart shared that love for the area. The two of them spent years moving into old homestead cabins up and down the creek and turning them into fishing camps. At the time fishing was not allowed during the winter on Clear Creek. No matter for most winters, with the cars the two drove, they couldn’t even get to Clear Creek. However, there was that one winter that was so open that January, February, a...

  • Bear Paw Meanderings

    Robert C. Lucke, BSM News|Jan 18, 2017

I have been giggling every since. I was talking to a friend on the telephone last night. The boiler was churning out heat madly but with the temperature around twenty below, this was indeed what we would have called in Glacier National Park a Three Dog Night. That expression came from an area where in the winter, elk stay. It is called Two Dog Flats. In researching the story of the naming of that area, I came across an old story, probably more fiction than fact, that name referred to how many dogs it took to keep you and your wife warm on a col...

  • Patching Cracks

    Erik Sietsema|Jan 18, 2017

One of my less successful goals for 2016 was to lose 30 pounds. Faced with the end of the calendar year, I buckled down and lost 10 pounds through a mixture of exercise and disciplined eating. This happened in the beginning of December. Then Christmas happened. Christmas is a stressful, busy time of year with lots of parties and wonderful gifts of food. As cookies, candies, cakes, and great leftovers began stacking up around my kitchen, my disciplined eating habits fell off and so did my exercise habits. Shortly after that, I found the 10...

  • Genereux family sees plenty of action

    Robert C. Lucke, BSM News|Jan 11, 2017

Five years ago had you asked Austin Genereux if his family would be attending motorcycle races all over the state, he probably would have looked at you like you were crazy. That is exactly what happened. You see for years now at the Genereux Ranch, Austin, his wife and kids, since they were very little, have been chasing cattle up and down coulees on motorcycles. Might it be added that they have gotten very good at it! It was not long ago that Austin heard about Off Road Motorcycle Races in...
