We are getting closer and closer to the opening of the new Clinic Building; a long anticipated day for the staff and community alike. After many set backs due to weather, shipping delays, contractor delays, and unforeseen circumstances, caring for you from the new building is finally starting to feel real. For the last few months, special planning meetings have taken place among the staff to help ensure a smooth transition. As they continue to work through the upcoming changes, it is important you know how this changes the process for you, the...
The Mountaineer is 114 years old and faces changes, which should be evident to all. The Havre Daily/Chronicle has decided it will no longer print the Big Sandy Mountaineer nor, for that matter, its own paper. It will be outsourced as well. Bozeman will be printing the Mountaineer at almost two times the cost I previously paid. We still need to find out the timeline, but we hope it will be similar to what we are doing now. The format has changed because of the paper's size, so please be patient w...

The Montana Army National Guard performed drills in the Big Sandy area over the last week and into the weekend. Their presence in the fields on the edge of the Big Sandy Airport is part of their annual field exercises, which typically account for 5 or 6 days of their two weeks of total trainings every year. Locals couldn't help but notice the camp set up on Judith Landing Road or hear the helicopter flying in the area throughout the day and into the night. Captain Kyle Sampson. who I spoke with...

The Sunshine Snippers 4-H Club has completed phase 1 of their community Audio – Visual project. The club purchased a portable screen, projector, speakers, and microphone. Along with those items, a rolling, locking cart was purchased for the projector for placement when in use and to be locked up when not. Members of the Big Sandy FFA Alumni & Supporters chapter helped put together the items that needed assembly. The items are at the Jerry Martin Memorial Hall for the community to have access t...
Have you ever gotten a bill in the mail from Big Sandy Medical Center (BSMC) or another medical facility and thought to yourself, ‘what in the world does this mean?’ Chances are, you have probably had a thought similar more than once. The medical billing system in American healthcare is confusing from the beginning to the end of the process, but that doesn’t mean it should be totally foreign to you. The billing department at BSMC has been working hard in the last few years to streamline the process, prevent errors, and make it easier for the p...
Of all patriotic holidays, Memorial Day is the most powerful for me. A veteran came up to me at the program and asked why more people didn't come. He was hurt and said, "I guess I'm just old fashion." There is just something about this holiday that brings tears to my eyes. The first stop is the breakfast put on by the Big Sandy Historical Society. It's a great breakfast, and everyone can sit around and visit while waiting for the parade. Every year, the parade is getting better. I remember...

The City of Big Sandy and Big Sandy Medical Center combined efforts to obtain enough grant funding to pay for an engineering study of the street drainage issues surrounding the Big Sandy Medical Center campus. The City received a $40,000 grant from the DNRC and the Hospital received a grant from the MT Facility Finance Authority for $25,000, which requires a $5,000 match from the Hospital. Ron Wiens, CEO of Big Sandy Medical Center said "with the medical center's campus expanding to include the...
All Montanans deserve access to library services that meet their needs. The public library standards identify a base level of service that residents and visitors should receive wherever they are in Montana. To be eligible for state funding, libraries must meet the public library standards. One standard currently being focused on by the Chouteau County library system is number 8: "The public library board, in consultation with the director, shall identify in writing what they want to accomplish i...
Memorial Day weekend visitors stopped in from Malta, Havre and Great Falls. They enjoyed watching our popular video of the Montana Picnic in New York’s Central Park, took our “tour,” and found books and records in our big collection. A few personal words about this newspaper.T he Mountaineer has been a vital part of our local culture since 1911. One seldom recognized service is the space provided or people to express best wishes and “Thank You” notices of all kinds. “I Wonder” if our children (among others) should be encouraged to give thanks f...

Barb Martin from Big Sandy and Dan Wilkins presented a program to the Big Sandy students called Pull Your Share. It is designed to teach what a Knapweed looks like and encourage students to pull the weed before it forms seeds. The program hopes to have teachers and their classes adopt sites that are infested with noxious weeds. When pulling weeds, wear gloves, pull close to the ground, and remove as much root as possible. If the weeds are pulled before seed heads have formed, it is ok to leave the pulled weeds. If seed heads have formed, it is...
Eighteen residents of the Big Sandy and Box Elder communities participated in a “Crosswalk” prayer event on Saturday, May 18th. The group carried a large cross and walked the ten mile stretch of highway between the Big Sandy Rest Area to Box Elder, stopping at each mile marker to pray for the Box Elder/Rocky Boy Community. The prayer meeting was organized by Rich Jesperson, who has felt a calling to organize a prayer meeting for some time. “Several years ago, I was having my daily devotions and just started to get a very strong picture in my...
Hello Big Sandy Community! With school nearly out for summer, I wanted to bring attention to a FREE food program that is new to our area. It is called the Summer Food Service Program, or SFSP for short. Not to be confused with the Summer EBT (which does require paperwork) that is also being promoted right now. Superintendent Schrock, District Business Manager, Mary Merrill, and the Big Sandy School Board of Trustees all got the wheels of this train rolling which I’m sure was no easy feat, so if you see any of them be sure to thank them for a...
One of my favorite activities at the FE Miley Elementary School is the end-of-year Extravaganza, held on May 23rd. The kindergarten class theme was "Travels to Antarctica." Teacher Samantha Weaver said, "We collaborated with Connie Reichel when she went to Antarctica. So it was perfect. They just had a great time, and we learned a lot. I learned a lot." A study of four different Penguins on display was excellent, and a few of the students let me take their pictures once they had their penguin...
How Farmers, Gardeners and Insecticide Applicators Can Reduce Risks of Honeybee Injury When Spraying for Grasshoppers Honeybee injury results when pesticides are applied or allowed to drift to hives, blooming crops, wild plants or weeds. The following article comes from the University of Nebraska and is available at: https://bit.ly/3vQPhuz. Do not treat fields in bloom. Be especially careful when treating crops, such as alfalfa, sunflowers and canola, which are highly attractive to bees. Insecticide labels carry warning statements about...
This year's 2024 graduates wanted to have the shortest graduation in Big Sandy's history, and it was. It only lasted 30 minutes, but it fit this class. Dan Schrock, Big Sandy Superintendent, welcomed family and friends. His welcome was the only speaker besides the Salutatorian and the Valedictorian. Dan said, "Distinguished guests, and most importantly, graduates. Today marks a significant milestone in your journey to you, your hard work, dedication, and unwavering commitment to excellence.'...
Do you have a vehicle with wheels or hooves that can go at least walking speed AND stop? If you do, you’re halfway there! What you do with those wheels and hooves of ‘go and stop’ is up to you. Classics, junkers and clunkers. Horses wagons and wheelers. The campaign to unsuck the memorial day parade is entering its second season. We’re inviting y’all to join us! We have the talent, the infrastructure and the manpower to make our little hometown parade one of the funnest (and maybe even funniest) in the state! Our towns sports teams ~ get a flo...
The old saying “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure” best describes the heart of every yard sale. For some folk, it provides an opportunity to declutter and make a little cash from belongings no longer useful, to others it’s a chance to refine the art of a good barter. For the past 7 years, Keely Bahnmiller has been bringing wheelers and dealers together in our small town for one large yard sale! It’s a day quite a few locals look forward to and usually brings in people from surrounding towns. There’s something special about late sp...
Buckwheat: A Hazard for Montana’s Export Markets As farmers finalize spring planting, remember the importance of keeping Montana grain exports free from buckwheat contamination. Food safety is an important factor for purchasers of Montana’s wheat. Montana exports most of its wheat to Asian countries in the Pacific Rim. Human populations in Asian countries have buckwheat allergies that are more common than in other parts of the world. Buckwheat seed has the potential to contaminate commodity wheat crops when grown prior or adjacent to whe...
This year, the school district is in a much better place. As we approach summer, there aren't as many places to fill as last year. “We have a fourth-grade position (teacher) applied for. She's an experienced teacher coming to us by way of Winnett. Before that, she was the UN Western Educator of the Year. She is hardworking and very student-centered. I am really excited about possibly having her here as a teacher.” However, she will need to be approved, so the Mountaineer cannot have that information confidentially, but it is really enc...
