  • Getting By

    Janell Barber|Jan 8, 2020

Did the holiday season treat you well with many delicious treats that have you feeling like you overindulged? Or, feeling a bit sedentary and wanting to get some activity into your day? Physical activity during the winter months is challenging. It is cold, windy, slick and requires a lot of additional effort to go outside. Do not let these reasons decrease your physical activity, or, worse, eliminate it all together. While there are many outdoor winter sports to take part in, not everyone has the ability to enjoy these activities. Here are...

  • The Needs of the Chouteau County Cancer Support Group

    Jan 8, 2020

Our organization wants to thank everyone for supporting our efforts. It is because of the support throughout the county that we are able to offer assistance to individuals diagnosed with cancer. The most important thing you can do for us is to notify us if you know of someone diagnosed with cancer. We reach out to individuals within our county as soon as we learn they may have cancer. Our initial contact is to confirm if they do have cancer and then to offer our services. It is a disappointment to find out several months after a diagnosis that...

  • 'Twas the Night before Christmas

    Clement Clarke Moore|Dec 25, 2019

'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse; The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there; The children were nestled all snug in their beds, While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads; And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap, Had just settled down for a long winter's nap, When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter, I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter....

  • Sunshine Snippers give Christmas Gift to Grade School

    Zoe Merrill|Dec 25, 2019

For the second year, the Sunshine Snippers 4-H club has chosen a project to help children in the area. They put a Christmas tree up at the grade school and decorated it with stocking hats, mittens, and gloves. This year they added a second tree at the Big Sandy Library. Interviewing children is difficult. I tried to visit with them, at the Christmas Stroll, while they were sitting wrapping presents for donations. They all said the same thing. "We wanted to help kids who didn't have anything."...

With the new year upon us, resolutions may be on your mind. Have you found how easy they are to make them but not as easy to keep? People who make new year’s resolutions are 10 times more likely to accomplish the changes than those who do not formally make resolutions. You have taken the first step by making the resolution. Here are some pointers in keeping it. 1. Plan the resolution out in steps, small increments. Rather than say you are going to save money, review your budget and designate a realistic amount of how much you can dedicate to p...

There were five guests present. "A crowd," according to Mayor Schwarzbach. The pool repair is halfway done. The weather hasn't cooperated, but the pool deck is cut, and they need to run the pipe. • High school Choir Performs Christmas Concert

    Kalee Rose|Dec 18, 2019

This year's High school Christmas Concert was beautiful and filled with some fantastic talents. The whole choir was dressed in silky, purple robes with white trim. They all looked quite lovely. It began with an opening processional. They entered the auditorium in pairs, walking down the two aisles singing a mix of classical Christmas music. The introducing song was Christmas Bells Are Ringing. The second song was Silent Night. It was accompanied by sign language from the whole choir. Let There...

  • Getting By

    Janell Barber|Dec 18, 2019

This time of year can bring additional stress of high expectations, overcommitments, a lot to get done, etc. Perhaps misunderstandings and miscommunication add to the craziness. Under these circumstances, strong communication is key to maintaining positive relationships and interactions with others. We hear this this over and over but what does strong communication really mean? Communication is how we send and receive messages in ways which create understanding between individuals. It is what we say and how we say it. A majority of our...

  • Another Stroll in the books; Big Sandy's Heart Always Beats

    Zoe Merrill|Dec 11, 2019

Thanks to the Big Sandy CSI organization for another Christmas celebration. It started early. Santa waited patiently for his first visit at the Mint. When I got there, the place was packed. After I took a picture and I went down to the Bear Paw Coffee Shop and ordered a coffee. A small child came in, and I asked if they wanted to see Santa, they asked where and I told them at the Mint. They said, "The bar?" Yes, it has Big Sandy flair! Vendors started carrying their wares shortly after 8:00, at...

  • F.E. Miley sings the sounds of Christmas

    Zoe Merrill|Dec 11, 2019

For some, the FE Miley School program has been six years in the making. For others, it was their first one. For me, it is always my favorite concert. It could be that I love Christmas, or it could be I love children playing instruments they are still learning on. I also love how the little girls dress up and feel so pretty. I love watching the littlest coming out on to the stage, scared and shy, looking for their mom or dad, or anybody they know. See their faces light up when they find them, and...

Erin is a senior at Big Sandy Highschool, where she is involved in sports, music, and the FFA. She grew up with three brothers, one younger and two older. They resided in Dillon, where Erin had the opportunity to join the Junior Fiddlers, a group of young musicians that plays old tunes on old fiddles. The Junior Fiddlers is a great chance to get together with other musicians who have the...

PASSWORDS Using strong passwords, not using the same password for everything and changing passwords often are some of the most important ways to keep your online accounts from being hacked. Most of these points you have heard before but check them out to see if there are any new ones or need a reminder. - Create passwords with at least 8 characters (at least 1 number, 1 letter and 1 special character) which are easy to remember but not easy to guess. A phrase or sentence is a good way to help remember it. The more characters, the more secure....
