Helping You Prepare for the Gardening Season Believe it or not, the gardening season will be upon us before we know it. Below are a few gardening facts to help you prepare for the upcoming season. • Soil tests should be taken in the garden every three years. • The best time to collect a soil sample is in the spring after soil thaw. • Fall soil sampling is not recommended because nitrogen in the soil is depleted during the fall and winter seasons. • Do not work soil when it is wet. If the soil sticks to the shovel, wait a few more days. • The n...

  • 2023 Volleyball Season

    Jenny Sant|Mar 13, 2024

It takes notable dedication for students to commit to a sport before school even starts. But that is what every volleyball player at Big Sandy High School did. We started practicing on the 11th of August. School started on the 21st, so we had already had 8 days of practice. Since Big Sandy High School is a class C school, we don’t cut anyone who tries out for the team. On the first and second days of practice, my coach, Brittany McKenney Richard, holds tryouts for the varsity team. So we have to run a mile and do drills to show our setting, p...

    Erik Sietsema|Mar 6, 2024

The Big Sandy Girl’s Basketball team is heading to the state basketball tournament for the first time in 15 years. The girls team has spent the last week and a half resting, getting healthy, and preparing for their trip to Great Falls to face off against the top ranked teams in Montana. I spoke with Coach Travis Baumann about the team, their season, and the team’s morale going into the state tournament. Travis described the girls as confident going into some stiff competition later this week. “Right now, because of the what they were able to do...

  • Mental Health and Neurotransmitters

    Mar 6, 2024

Early I interviewed, Cheyenne Feltz, DNP PMHNP-BC, the most recent provider at the Big Sandy Medical Center. Feltz is the new mental health provider, who is a Board Certified (BC) Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) with a Doctor of Nursing (DNP). After the interview she gave me a sheet that I found extremely interesting. I knew nothing about Neurotransmitter. After reading this sheet it frustrates me to hear people say we should all just “buck up” or pull ourselves up by our boot straps. So many of the issues of my fri...

  • It's Not about winning; it's about supporting community

    Zoe Merrill|Feb 28, 2024

It isn't about the sport. It's about supporting the kids, friends, and community. There was a fundraiser/dinner- a Divisional Tournament Pep Rally with a Spaghetti Dinner, a 3-Point shoot, a pop shot, and Little Pioneer Basketball games on Tuesday, the 20th. On February 29th, there will be a Dodgeball Tournament at 7:30 pm following the junior high Wrestling. If you had attended the Pep Rally, it would have been obvious to see our support for each other. Ella Jurenka told me they fed 150 people...

  • This week in Big Sandy History: A Shoot out at High Noon

    Erik Sietsema|Feb 28, 2024

8 years ago this week, Big Sandy residents witnessed a shoot out when two well respected locals got into an argument. One appeared to have gone for his gun, prompting the other to draw and fire. The paper described the injury as “mortal.” The article was written the day of the shooting and the paper went to press shortly thereafter, which resulted in a fairly vague retelling. The crazy thing about the story is that there was no proper follow up. Very little explanation about the shooting appeared in the paper afterward. To make the story eve...

Winter Fertilization Facts Fall and winter broadcast application of urea (46-0-0) continues to take place on various winter wheat farms across Chouteau County. The major concern of broadcasting urea is nitrogen loss through ammonia volatilization. Volatilization results when there is a conversion from dissolved ammonia to ammonia gas. From 2008-2012, Rick Engel and Clain Jones (MSU Soil Scientists) have studied NH3 losses from surface-applied urea. Below are a few conclusions of their research. • Engle’s research (4 years and 20 studies) doc...

"It consists of all of Chouteau County and about a third, maybe a little more of Cascade County. It's a whole new district." I'm interested in why he decided to run for office. I asked him who was going to be doing his calving for him. Dana said, "My lovely bride!" The event started all this-"for the past 25 years, ever since President Clinton signed the National Monument that moved right throug...

  • Big Sandy Theater group puts on a Musical

    Erik Sietsema|Feb 21, 2024

The Big Sandy Theater will be stretching itself this year by putting on a musical comedy. Nonsense in the Northwoods will be showing March 15th and 16th. The production is the story of a run-down lodge on the backside of Moose Lake, and it accidentally draws a zany cross section of guests on the heels of a fake Bigfoot sighting and a newspaper feeding frenzy looking for the worst member of congress who is hiding out in the hotel. One director pointed out that the Saturday showing is before the...

  • The Tea at BSMC

    Jessica Ophus|Feb 21, 2024

8 at BSMC is certainly off to a good start! The electric panel has finally been installed at the new clinic building. After waiting for over a month, progress can continue again. Hopefully, it will all work like it should and heat will be flowing this week. From there, the building needs a good cleaning and inspection, then the move in can begin! While all of that is happening across the street, inside the current building, the dining room expansion will be taking place. It should only be a...

  • Mountaineer welcomes Junior Class Articles

    Feb 21, 2024

Marla Ray came out of retirement to teach English at Big Sandy High School. By all accounts, she is doing a great job teaching English. We've published several poems the students have written, so I asked her to consider teaching her students to write articles. I asked Marla to tell me a little about what her Junior class is working on. Marla wrote, "The Junior English class has been learning how to create an accurate resume, write good letters of application for job interviews or college scholarships, as well as letters to the Editor, thank...

  • The Girls' Locker Room

    Carmen Tan|Feb 21, 2024

Over the past few years, our school has made numerous improvements, including new mats on the gym wall, a new basketball court, a new football locker room for the guys, new lunch tables, new wrestling mats, and probably more that I haven't mentioned. However, I believe that the girls' locker room needs to be improved because it appears to have remained the same for at least ten years. I think it's important for our school to recognize that if they can make improvements in other areas of our...

  • The Complete Flip-Around of Big Sandy Girls Basketball

    Jai Baumann|Feb 21, 2024

Big Sandy Lady Pioneers Basketball have struggled for the past 15 years. In the season of 2020-2021, our girls record was 0-16. The next season, 2021-2022 we won a few games with a record of 6-14. Then we made quite a jump, with a record of 12-9 in 2022-2023. This basketball season, we are hoping to cause a ruckus at the District and even at the Divisional tournament. Our record as of now is 18-4, with the W's continuing to increase. The new coaching staff has helped the team tremendously as...

    Eva Yeadon|Feb 21, 2024

In Class C, basketball season is the most exciting time of the year. That is true this year in particular for the Lady Pioneers. A great start is all l was expecting, anticipating much success for us. With one weekend left of games until tournaments, we were currently 13-3. We started off strong in December at pre-season tournaments in Rudyard and Chester. Our two opponents for the weekend were two 10C teams, Sunburst and Augusta. Sunburst was a scrappy battle, but we pulled it off. For the...

Last year at State Convention, we were very fortunate and had a Farm Business Management team place second overall. That team consisted of Lance Rutledge, Jaycee Worrall, Angie Sant, and Mattie Gasvoda who all got to compete this year at National Convention. Alex Worrall and Sever...
