  • Check your carbon monoxide testers

    Shane Chauvet|Jan 17, 2024

Please read this. This is important. Everyone should check to make sure they have a couple working carbon monoxide detectors in their house. Erica had put one in the house a couple of years ago. Erica and some of the kids had headaches yesterday. They thought it was just a bug going around. The detector went off last night as we all were going to bed. Changed the batteries and it went off again. I checked my furnace exhaust and it was free flowing. Got another detector as there must be something wrong with the first detector. The second...

  • Big Sandy Schools relaunching Adult Program

    Erik Sietsema|Jan 17, 2024

Big Sandy Schools is relaunching its adult education opportunities for the community. As 2023 drew to a close, the school stepped away from Covid era policies that limited facility usage for the community, which has opened the door for resuming the program. Some classes are already being offered and more are sure to be available as 2024 gets under way. I spoke with Dan Schrock, the school superintendent, about the changes: “We have an adult education levy that we run annually in support of adult education. With that levy there’s an obl...

  • Dora Mahood Generous Gift to Big Sandy

    Zoe Merrill|Jan 10, 2024

Dora Mahood blessed Big Sandy by distributing $400,000 for various causes throughout the town. Everyone deserves acknowledgment when the Big Sandy Mountaineer runs obituaries, and I don’t know the person I read about them. Dora Frieda Mahood, 94, passed away on October 10, 2023, and we ran her obituary. I now wish I had an opportunity to visit with her. Dora Mahood gave back in a big way to her hometown. She donated $400,000 in total. The Big Sandy School was given $50 K, and you can read about that in a separate article about that donation i...

  • American Legion's 7th Annual Coyote Derby had 29 teams

    Lindsay Boyce|Jan 10, 2024

The 7th Annual Big Sandy American Legion Coyote Derby started off much better than last year. The weather was chilly, but no snow stopped all the snow mobile participants we typically see. However, it didn't slow down the calling class teams as the number of dogs they brought in in comparison to the open class was pretty crazy. We started the weekend with 29 teams for a total of 98 participants. With the milder than normal weather, not as many coyotes were killed as the previous year but teams...

    Erik Sietsema|Jan 3, 2024

The Big Sandy Food Bank closed out its calendar year with a generous gift from students at Big Sandy Schools and First Bank of Montana. The gift helped augment the food bank's stores in a time where inflation has made keeping the shelves stocked increasingly difficult. In addition, changes in donations for this year's food drive have expanded the products offered in the near future. For several years, the Elementary School has done a food drive to assemble Thanksgiving and Christmas food boxes...

  • Big Sandy Community Amazingly Generous

    Ron Wiens|Jan 3, 2024

Having worked in Big Sandy for over a year now, one thing that continually amazes me is the generosity of the people who call this town home. And by generosity, I’m not just talking about money, but of time. The members of the Rotary Club give countless hours of service to this community so we can have Christmas lights to enjoy downtown and a park in the mountains to recreate, and most recently, an ice-skating rink for kids to play. The hospital Guild volunteers somehow pull together a huge rummage sale every year. Roberta Edwards volunteers c...

    Ali Morsette|Dec 27, 2023

What made you volunteer to be the Big Sandy Pioneer mascot? So I could show people we have bravery, strength, and courage. I wanted to show pride for our teams. How do you feel knowing you're the mascot? I feel amazing. There is something special about being able to show the Pioneers I am there to support them and remind them of who they are. Do you ever get nervous by being in front of such a large crowd? Sometimes I do. I really do not like when the crowd is quiet, but when everyone is...

How Do We Improve Percent Calf Crop Weaned? Percent calf-crop weaned is of paramount economic importance in a cow-calf operation. Selection, mating and management to improve reproductive efficiency are all important areas to improve percent calf-crop weaned. From a standpoint of genetics and animal breeding, reproductive traits are low in heritability (typically 10% - 20%) but show high levels of heterosis in response to crossbreeding. If a producer is going to take advantage of heterosis in one part of the commercial cow-calf operation, take...

  • Music filled the night-Elementary Concert

    Zoe Merrill|Dec 20, 2023

It's always the same. A wonderful celebration of Christmas is the Elementary Christmas Concert. This year was the biggest turnout. The auditorium was almost full. It started with the 4th-grade class playing recorders. They played Good King Wenceslas and Snowfall. The 5th grade band, in their very first concert, played Go Tell Aunt Rhody, A Mozart Melody, and Jingle Bells. Every student in the 5th grade must play in the band, so it's a delightful concert with squeaks and squawks. The 6th-grade...

    Zoe Merrill|Dec 13, 2023

For the past ten years, Mrs. Sheri Moore's third-grade class has taken a break from their social studies textbooks to tackle a different kind of learning. They hop aboard an imaginary airplane to travel around the world to learn about how Christmas is celebrated in other countries. This year, the students will "travel" to 8 different countries, plus the United States, with six countries having special guests present the information. The students learn about each country's foods, traditions,...

  • Celebrating Christmas with Marlys Myers

    Zoe Merrill|Dec 13, 2023

Celebrating Christmas is a yearly adventure for Marlys Myers. She has a blast centering her decorations around the 1989 cult comedy National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation movie. She loves the movie and watches it every Christmas. She asked me if I had ever watched it, and I laughed out loud. My children and husband completely memorized that movie. I can't even remember how many times we've watched. So it was a blast walking into a Christmas Vacation celebration. Marlys even told me she has had...

  • Christmas Festivities at BSMC

    Jessica Ophus|Dec 13, 2023

While there may not be much for snow outside, it sure is beginning to look a lot like Christmas over at BSMC. The trees are trimmed, the halls are decorated and the festivities have started. A whole lot of celebration is packed into the month between the Thanksgiving holiday and the Christmas holiday. Last week Mary joined us from Havre to play some beautiful Christmas music on the Harp.
