The dreaded cold and flu season is upon us! When someone says they have a cold or the flu, what is actually happening in their body? For most people, the “common cold” is a viral infection of the upper respiratory system. In other words, a stuffy nose, head pressure, sore throat, and a cough. There usually is no fever or chills, and maybe just slight body aches. In most cases, this will pass in 5-10 days and over the counter treatments will help to ease symptoms. The “flu,” also known as Influenza, does usually bring fever and chills, body ac...
Veterans Day is November 11th. It always comes so quickly and I don’t have time to put together a good article for the Veteran’s Day paper. I need help. I need the names of every Veteran in the Big Sandy area along with a picture. And I don’t want to leave anyone out. So it’s important to start gathering the material now. So please send information and a picture if you have one to bsm1@mtintouch.net. National Today website has the following information about Veteran’s Day. I don’t want to just give the history of the day itself on Veterans Day...
Fall Management of Cheatgrass in Fallow Cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum), also commonly called downy brome, is a problematic weed in winter wheat and in rangeland throughout Montana. Cheatgrass typically germinates in the autumn, overwinters, and produces seed by mid-summer. The cheatgrass life cycle is similar to winter wheat which makes it a problematic weed in winter wheat fields. Cheatgrass is an abundant seed producer. Seed is only viable for one to two years in the seedbank. Cheatgrass typically germinates from late August to early October...
The Pioneer Parents Team met on September 12th at the FE Miley Library. Officers were voted on: President Rachel Baumgarn; Vice President Sarah Sura; Secretary Scarlet Auble; and Treasurer Misty LeFurgey. This is a group of parents who want to support and encourage the teachers in our community. Its design loosely follows the old PTA. They hope to encourage more parents to care about the classroom and get involved. It is also easy to understand how important it is to support the teachers as they...
When considering things about the future, many people create goals. These goals can range anywhere from getting a driver's license to simply buying a bike. However, no matter what they may be, goals all have to follow these inherent steps: planning, establishing a certain mindset, obtaining the necessities, and finally, taking the first real step towards completion. If a goal comes to mind, and it seems that there is a strong feeling of devotion towards it, the first step in this journey is to create a plan. Planning a goal may seem like...

There has been some discussion lately on proper etiquette for skateboarding. There is a sign right in the skate park. Read it, but I also did some research on Surfertoday website. 1.The skate park is just that, for skateboarders. It was not designed for sliding down. The truth is children have been stuck in the bottom of the bowl. If you’re not skating, stay away--It’s dangerous to stand in the middle of the action. It is also annoying to have someone blocking riders’ tricks and maneuvers. If you’re a spectator, keep a safe distance. 2.Begin...

September 10-16 is Environmental Services Week. While Environmental Services (EVS) may sound like a part of the EPA, it is blanket term used to include a facilities housekeepers, maintenance, and laundry departments. EVS at Big Sandy Medical Center is responsible for cleaning and surface disinfection, waste management, laundry, pest control, safety and security, maintaining the flooring and fixtures, grounds management, including mowing the lawn and...
Civic Duty is a sacred responsibility! One we should all hold in high regard. Those Civic Duties include voting, paying taxes, obeying laws, and jury duty. You may notice a slight difference in the paper this week. We found out on Friday that Leslie had Jury duty on Monday morning. Yes, that’s the day the paper goes to print. I let the Havre Daily know that it would be late getting the paper to press because I was doing it solo. I needed to call an InDesign expert a couple of times because I was totally lost. And Erik Sietsema was enormous h...

Many children or young adults believe that the internet is a great place to find opportunities such as modeling. But, they won’t know what is a genuine offer and what is phony. A girl may think that somebody thinks she is gorgeous, and they may tell her that they are going to make her a big star…famous! Little does she know that if she goes through with agreeing to meet and audition, she may never live a normal life again… On the other hand, this is the reality: she may not become the big star she thought she was going to be. She could end u...

The Belt Performing Arts Center held its 3rd Annual “Beltstock” concert over the past weekend. The family friendly concert ran from 4 to 10 PM and featured three highly entertaining musical acts. The event is a fundraiser for the Belt Performing Arts Center. Casey Dawson, who is the treasurer for the Belt Theater Board, spoke with me about the event and the theater. “This is our main fu...

From the transition to a Critical Access Hospital, adding an electronic health record system, the coming and going of providers and staff, remodeling projects, the opening of the Wellness Center, and the future opening of the Rural Health Clinic building. All of these changes are overseen by the Board of Directors. The Board of Directors is a team of five community members, who volunteer their time to ensure operations at the facility are in the best interest of the...
In the realm of career choices, individuals often find themselves at a crossroads, torn between pursuing a job that offers enjoyment and one that promises a higher income. By Zoe Merrill It is always difficult to write an article about an event that happens every year and The Fall Kickoff is now a tradition. I looked for something new to write about and there just wasn't anything, but as I waited for the long food lines to dwindle I enjoyed just watching our community come together to visit and laugh. The children running on the football field playing catch with a football. Dan Schrock, Big Sandy Superintendent, was wearing a red apron and grilling hamburgers...

Emily LePinnet, who owns and operates that bakery, explained the new approach to the business. “I’ll continue doing some baking throughout the week to fill custom orders for people. During the training for Big Sandy School Board Trustees, there was a handout given to them on how the education burden has increased over the years. I thought what he presented was interesting. So I’m taking this information directly from a handout out “The Ever Increasing Burden of the America’s Public Schools.” Which was taken from a book by Jamie Vollmer Copyright 2012 “From 1900-1010, the new responsibilities were related to student health. We added: Lessons in Basic Hygiene, Courses on Nutrition, Immunizations, and Screening for Vision, H...
