Vacation Bible School for ages four years through those students just finishing third grade was held at Grace Lutheran Church, the mornings of June 5 – 8. This year’s theme was “Praise the Lord,” and all 22 young children were excellent about raising their voices in joyful songs of PRAISE which may also use the words “Hallelujah!” or “Rejoice!” or “Thank you!” or as their rap song went: “Praise, what’s that? It’s a Yippee, Yahoo, Way to go, God!” Our main Bible verse was from the book of Psalms which has the most verses about praise of any of t...

  • Community Health Improvement Week

    Jessica Ophus|Jun 14, 2023

In 1962, a plan was devised to build a medical center in the Big Sandy Community. The folks recognized that keeping a doctor around was vital for the town. They knew a sure way to do that was to provide a space for them to work with patients needing medical care. The community came together, raised the funds, and built the Big Sandy Medical Center in 1965. While having a doctor in town was sure handy, the goals of the facility have always revolved around the care of the people it serves. As patients, family members, or the community as a...

  • Big Sandy Community comes out for Memorial Day Parade

    Zoe Merrill|Jun 7, 2023

It starts at the Big Sandy Museum, with breakfast served by the Big Sandy Historical Society. However, it's more than breakfast. Sitting around drinking coffee and catching up with friends is the real draw. Breakfast is cooked outside in a tent, brought in, and served by the door. If you didn't have an opportunity to eat, you also didn't have an opportunity to donate to the Historical Society. They need your support to keep the museum open. If you didn't eat there, you probably aren't aware of...

  • Pioneer Pen

    Dan Schrock|Jun 7, 2023

It is hard for me to believe that this is the last day of school for the Pioneer staff and students. It seems odd to me for the school to be this quiet and devoid of the laughter that we shared throughout the 2022-2023 school year. Odd as that may be, I am so very appreciative and happy for all of those who gave so much of themselves and their time and those who have grown so very much throughout this past school year. I want to wish all of you my best wishes for a safe and memorable summer under the Big Sky with family and friends. I’d also l...

  • When Freedom isn't free Big Sandy Remembers

    Zoe Merrill|May 31, 2023

While the paper was getting sent to the press Monday, Memorial Day was happening. What is Memorial Day? You always hear things like, "It's a 3-day weekend" or "We are gonna grill, camp, go to the lake, and have fun." Yes, it is those things, but what is the true reason we celebrate Memorial Day and its significant history? Memorial Day officially became a "federal holiday" in 1971. It is an American holiday observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in...

    Leslie Gregory|May 31, 2023

Summer is finally here! It has been along winter and it is time for fun in the sun. The Big Sandy Pool is a great place to spend that time with friends and to cool off on the hot days. The pool isn’t quiet ready for our usual June 1st opening. We have hit some snags this year. We are having some trouble finding Lifeguards to fill positions. We usually are good with 8 lifeguards and some years we have had 10. This year we have 6 so far and trying to find an additional 2 at least. This problem could impact our hours of operation. It is a great su...

  • Green Acres

    Tyler Lane|May 31, 2023

Tree watering rules of thumb Most trees will not require watering after three years, but during periods of drought, trees will need some help. Below are a few recommendations to help trees survive drought conditions. • Water trees three times a month in addition to watering your lawn. • Deep watering to a depth of 12” inches below the soil surface is recommended. Saturate the soil around the tree within the “dripline” (the outer edges of the tree’s branches) to disperse water down toward the roots. • For evergreens, water 3’-5’ beyond the dripl...

  • Hands Save Lives

    Jessica Ophus|May 31, 2023

Do you know what to do if your loved ones heart stops? Of course you’d call 911, but what will you do while you wait? If CPR is started within one minute of a person becoming unresponsive, they have a 90% chance of survival. Those are pretty good odds, but survival rates dwindle quickly. Their chances decrease by 10% for every minute that the heart is not beating. Living in rural Montana means you can drive from one side of town to the other in just a couple of minutes, however, it also means that help may be hours away. Especially on rural roa...
