  • charbaby clay: A new business in town

    Zoe Merrill|Nov 30, 2022

Charlotte Danreuther knows clay. She's hand-thrown clay with perfection for years. When you see her work (art), you'll think they're made from a form. Each one is perfectly made. She is opening her shop in the Lift (odd fellows) building on the left side. She will be open during the Christmas stroll from 8-4. If she decides to open before then, it will be on Facebook for a soft opening. I can tell you I have waited for years for someone to do pottery in our town. I went over before anything was...

Christmas Tree Care hen it comes to Christmas tree care during the holidays, the best strategy is to keep it simple. All a tree really needs to maintain freshness is adequate water. Longevity is easily achieved by using the proper tree stand and keeping the water level in the stand above the base of the tree. The following recommendations will help to maintain the freshness and aroma of a live Christmas tree this holiday season. Use a tree stand that holds enough water for the size of the tree. The rule of thumb is one quart of water per one...

  • Pioneers are State Champions!!!

    Zoe Merrill|Nov 30, 2022

Champions are made! And when they win, it is huge! There was just something about this year. From the beginning of the season....no, it started last summer; I knew extra work was being done to prepare to win state. The boys had a positive attitude. There was no doubt in their minds. From the very first game against White Sulpher Springs (46-6) to the last against Broadview/Livina (67-27), they proved there were the best. Of course, there was a great variety of offense plays made by athletic...

  • Pioneer Pen

    Dan Schrock|Nov 30, 2022

One of the very best parts of my job as a school superintendent is that I have both the privilege and the honor of having a front row seat to the accomplishments of our students. Those accomplishments come in many forms, from academic to athletic, to co-curricular events and activities. For the sake of this article I will focus on our recent 6 Man Football State Championship. The word on the street when I moved to Big Sandy in June was that our football team was pretty good but unfortunately they had fallen short in the playoffs in previous...

  • One very excited girl!

    Zoe Merrill|Nov 23, 2022

I was at the high school getting a couple of photos. Piper Phillips was there practicing for the play. She came up to me and said, "Are you from the newspaper?" I knew right away what she wanted to talk to me about. I said I was, and she said she had the picture in her backpack. I asked to see it, and she smiled really big and went to get it. I wondered if I could take her picture, so we went into the hallway. Don Schrock, the Superintendent, was walking the halls, stopped and looked at her...

  • Big Sandy Theater Presents Madhouse December 2 & 3

    Erik Sietsema|Nov 23, 2022

Big Sandy Theater will be putting on their largest show yet, on December 2nd and 3rd. It’s a Madhouse is a “Super fun and crazy spin on a classic ‘who done it’ tale,” according to Dianna Keane, the co-director of the production. It’s a Madhouse tells the story of the Pembrook family, who are fighting over their recently deceased father’s estate. They are taken by surprise when Father chooses to distribute the family inheritance in a “finders keepers, losers weepers” type treasure hunt between his heirs. That’s just the beginning of the ma...

  • New Honor Society inductees

    Zoe Merrill|Nov 23, 2022

Recently inducted into the Big Sandy Chapter of the National Honor Society were Eva Wagoner, Cody Boone, and Mattie Gasvoda. Jessie Jaramillo, Big Sandy High School's art teacher, is the sponsor of the Big Sandy National Honor Society. Membership in the Honor Society is an honor and should be recognized. She told me that she also has the student write a letter of interest and get a letter of recommendation, and once they are inducted into the program, they must complete 50 hours of community...

  • Big Sandy honors local Veteran's

    Zoe Merrill|Nov 16, 2022

I grew up respecting Veterans Day; my father was a vet. But it wasn't until my daughter, Serena, and her husband, Kody, were home did I fully understand the depth of the day. I remember my father tearing up every time the national anthem was played, and he insisted on flying the flag daily. I thought I would visit with a few because I knew whether the vets could tell me or not was important. I wanted to allow them to express themselves. Most of them probably would have liked a little more time...

  • Miracle on Main street, Stroll Buttons are on sale now

    Zoe Merrill|Nov 16, 2022

This year's Christmas Stroll theme is a Miracle on Main Street. Marless reminded me, "As you know, it's sort of a twist of the Miracle of 34th Street. Santa has to go to court and prove he is Santa, how the kids put up "I Believe" signs in the window. So they will make some signs to say "I believe ."Then we can have them and put them in all the downtown buildings. Yes. And I hope all the kids at home put some up in their windows at home too. You know.....all right, a miracle might be having...

Grain storage inspections should begin close to Thanksgiving Inspecting grain bins for pests on or before Thanksgiving is a great rule of thumb for Chouteau County producers. The Lesser grain borer Rhyzopertha dominica is one of the most injurious beetles known to attack stored grain. The Lesser grain borer belongs to the Bostrichidae family of beetles, which are mostly wood boring insects. R. dominica causes major physical and off-odor damage to grain in storage. Identifying Characteristics: Adults are dark reddish-brown to black in color,...

  • The Tea at BSMC

    Jessica Ophus|Nov 16, 2022

New and exciting things are happening every day around BSMC. Some of them are internal affairs with little outward showing. Like our kitchen staff who are now all “Safe Serve” trained, or our maintenance department having received their boiler education. Other things are more obvious like the preparations for the new generator or the Modular Clinic that is coming soon! From the time this facility was built, the goal has always been to serve the community. What that service has looked like has evolved over the years, with technological adv...

Big Sandy Organics won the Albertsons Trail Mix Competition during this year's Boise Entrepreneur Week. Winning the competition brings a $50,000 prize and shelf space at Albertsons Supermarkets. Heather Dilworth, who owns the company with her husband, Thomas, explained the road that brought them to this recent win. "We went through some challenges this year. We had 11 employees earlier this year, and we had to lay every single one of them off, except for my husband and me." All of that began by...

  • How the Big Sandy Football Team Prevails

    Zoe Merrill|Nov 9, 2022

It is important to realize just how good our Pioneer Football team is. We need to celebrate the accomplishments and dedication it has taken to get where they are! But let's be honest, the others have been easy up to last week's game; they hadn't had any real competition. I wanted to know how they stayed hungry. What kept them giving their best week after week? So I invited the four senior captains, Lance Rutledge, Rusty Gasvoda, Braydon Cline, and Kody Strutz, to the Big Sandy teacher's lounge...

Cropping Questions and Answers to the Chouteau County Extension Office I have a prickly lettuce problem in my farm ground. Is it an annual? Prickly lettuce is a biennial and a winter annual. Do we have herbicide resistance in prickly lettuce in Chouteau County? Tim Siepel, MSU cropland weed specialist has tested prickly lettuce that is 2,4 D resistant. The plants came from the Geraldine area. He has seen glyphosate resistance in the greenhouse. Greenhouse plants are soft plants and will take in herbicides much more readily than a plant growing...

“Teamwork Makes The Dream Work” This past weekend I had the good fortune and opportunity to witness the community of Big Sandy rally together in support of our school and its football program. The kindness and generosity of those in Big Sandy was on full display for the benefit of others. Big Sandy, like most of northeastern Montana on Saturday, experienced 60 plus mph wind gusts. The force of those gusts knocked power out in our community for quite some time. Within a couple of minutes of the power going out, our Athletic Director gave me a c...

  • Food Drive was a Halloween Treat for the Food Bank

    Erik Sietsema|Nov 2, 2022

The youth group trick-or-treat food drive that took place last weekend was a smashing success, with over 800 items collected. Terry Grant, who ran the food bank side of the event, remarked: "I had no idea this food drive was going to gather the quantity of food it did. The youth group leaders and youth of the two churches did a fantastic job in making this happen, especially at this time of the year. It's community support like this that makes it possible to continue providing food to our...
