  • Green Acres

    Tyler Lane|Oct 5, 2022

Lawn and Garden advice for October and November Managing horticultural landscapes and house plants in November is important for healthy production during the growing season. Below are a few recommendations for Chouteau County gardeners. • Apply protective mulches to perennial beds. • Use a humidifier to maintain humidity for houseplants. • Prune out dead limbs of woody ornamentals. • Do not fertilize or transplant anything after Columbus Day. • Continue to water landscape plantings (trees, shrubs, and perennials) until the soil freezes....

Leslie Gregory, who has been involved in the stroll for nearly 5 years explained: "It's a lot for all of us to do, because we all have full time...

  • Big Sandy's New Ambulance Now in Service

    Melanie Schwarzbach|Sep 28, 2022

The Big Sandy Volunteer EMTs are riding in style nowadays. After months of delays, the new ambulance is finally in use. The fire department originally submitted a grant application in June of 2020 to the Montana Department of Transportation, which operates a grant program that pays for up to 90% of the cost of a new ambulance. The price of a new ambulance at the time was $220,000. The grant was awarded later that fall, but delays due to supply chain issues pushed back manufacturing and kept the...

  • 2nd Annual Harvest Fest Enjoyed By All

    Jessica Ophus|Sep 28, 2022

Harvest Fest 2022 was a success! We were blessed with perfect temperatures and a smoke-free sky after Friday's rain. The event was well attended and certainly enjoyed by all who came to enjoy the day. With the help of the Big Sandy Baracuda Swim Team, the kids in attendance tested their skills at games like ring toss, pop-can fishing, football throw, and balloon darts, among others. If they weren't partaking in a game, they were getting their face painted, playing on the bounce house, or...

Lentil Yield and Nitrogen Fixation Response to Inoculant and Fertilizer Lentil production has grown dramatically in the northern Great Plains over the past 20 years. In Montana and North Dakota, planted acreage of lentil has increased from 67,000 in 2000 to 585,000 in 2022 (USDA-NASS, 2022. Lentil is capable of biological nitrogen (N) fixation, a process in which rhizobia bacteria in legume root nodules convert N gas into N that is available for plant uptake. This makes lentil an attractive option for producers wanting to decrease fertilizer N...

The event was well attended, with around 175 people coming out to eat lunch and vote on the people's choice. There was also a pie baking contest as a part of the cook-off. Cooks had the opportunity to win in both the Judge's and People's Choice categories. The strongest showing of the day was Chase Hoffman, who has competed in...

  • Mountaineer Increases ad prices

    Sep 21, 2022

I have struggled with this for a year now, hoping I would not have to increase the cost of advertisements. However, when Havre Daily’s newspaper print broke down, and I had to have Helena print the paper, the price of printing rose four times what it was costing me at Havre. After Havre had their printers fixed, their costs increased. I cannot meet my expenses without raising the cost of my advertisements. I haven’t raised the cost of the advertisements for four years. I hope everyone will continue to support the Mountaineer as I need to mak...

  • Pioneer Parent Organization Forms to Support teachers

    Zoe Merrill|Sep 21, 2022

The organizational meeting of the Pioneer Parent Organization met at the Big Sandy Library. The purpose is to find ways to support the teachers of Big Sandy. Both teachers and parents will belong to the organization so they can communicate needs and ideas. Every idea is doable. For example, suppose you want to offer to help do little things. In that case, you can make copies, laminate items, cut out items, hand out backpack buddies, help at the book fair, bake goodies for the teacher's lounge,...

  • Medical Center Board Still Looking for a Permanent CEO

    Zoe Merrill|Sep 21, 2022

Ron Wiens is still the acting CEO; however, the Medical Center is still looking for a permanent CEO. Anyone interested in the position should contact the Medical Center to require how to apply. I attended the monthly board meeting of the Board of Directors for BSMC. There were 29 people in attendance, all associated with the medical center except myself. I want to express that this will not be meeting minutes, primarily because by the time it gets to print, many agenda items will have changed. Sarah Schlepp reported that currently, the Medical...

  • Alex Worrall wins Best In Show for Showmanship

    Sep 21, 2022

During the county fair, I set out to write articles highlighting incoming seniors with long histories of involvement in FFA and 4H competition. Both of the students I interview, Lance Rutledge and Jaycee Worrall, did well in the competitions this year and were interesting to interview. Though I originally planned to focus on seniors, I was repeatedly encouraged to write about Alex Worrall as well. Alex is in the 9th grade and has just switched to FFA after 8 years in 4H. "I showed a pig and a...

  • Disastrous Bear Paws Fire

    Zoe Merrill|Sep 14, 2022

It was a scorching day, over 100 degrees, with a strong wind of plus 20 miles an hour. Red flags warning were out when the fire alarm went off in Big Sandy. It was the kind of day that everyone needed to respond. The rumor was that it was arson because the fire was so sporadic. However, it was started by a contractor working on a cabin formerly owned by Keith Edwards and now owned by a relative. It was purely unintentional. He couldn't stop it and drove immediately to a place where there was...

    Erik Sietsema|Sep 14, 2022

"It's been awesome," explained Sydnie Stellpflug, the new Second Grade teacher, when I asked her about her experience at F.E. Miley Elementary School. "As a first year teacher, I was super nervous. I feel like I have every question in the world. But everyone's been super helpful. They jump right in and answer. They're checking on me throughout the day. 'Hey, is everything okay?' 'Do you need anything?'" Sydney was born and raised on a ranch in Wyoming. She graduated from the University of...

  • Medical Guild Rummage Sale a Go!

    Zoe Merrill|Sep 14, 2022

It's great to have it back! Everyone has missed the Medical Guild rummage sale. Twenty-nine people came to the luncheon, and ten of those were new younger people. Lisa Sipler was extremely happy to see new younger people caring about the medical center. It is good when we get involved and give back to our community. These new volunteers have already started working! They also have a new vice president--Laci Labuda. And Michele Robertson volunteered to be responsible for the PR and...

  • Green Acres

    Tyler Lane|Sep 14, 2022

Fall Management of Cheatgrass in Fallow Cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum), also commonly called downy brome, is a problematic weed in winter wheat and in rangeland throughout Montana. Cheatgrass typically germinates in the autumn, overwinters, and produces seed by mid-summer. The cheatgrass life cycle is similar to winter wheat. Cheatgrass is an abundant seed producer. Seed is only viable for one to two years in the seedbank and can be killed under drought conditions. Cheatgrass germinates from late August to early October and matures in early...

  • Editorial

    Zoe Merrill|Sep 14, 2022

One of the most frustrating things I deal with at the Mountaineer is that we are only a weekly. The time frame of getting things in often feels late after the fact. Also, it creates issues for people who want their information in the paper but get it to me too late to make the deadline. The deadline is Friday by noon, except for those articles about weekend events. Why Friday? Because putting the paper together is like a six/eight-page jigsaw puzzle, which takes time. We send the paper out to the printers by 10:30 AM Monday so it can be...

  • Big Sandy Senior Center thriving in the first month

    Zoe Merrill|Sep 7, 2022

The Senior Center has been open for one month. By their own admission when it first opened, they needed to work on it to make it run smoother. They’ve done that now. There are many things that are making it work. The most amazing thing is the number of volunteers stepping up to make it successful. They have a new working set of bylaws. The financial review has been completed, and it has been used to make a budget they can work with. Between 37 and 50 meals are being served each day. I’ve eaten there, so I know it’s good. According to the contra...

  • The Catholic Church's annual Harvest Fest is scheduled for Saturday, September 17th

    Zoe Merrill|Sep 7, 2022

Committee members Jessica Ophus, Judy Yirsa, Sarah Sura, and Kathy Camp have taken an idea and made it, even after just one year, an event everyone looks forward to. My grandchildren spent the entire day there last year. Jessica said she got involved by accident. It was supposed to be a different Jessica, but they called her by accident. She's glad they did, because she believes we need to do more things to celebrate. The purpose of this article is to highlight the event, but more important, to...

  • Havre Farmers Market: Flowers, Jewelry, Food and Live Music

    Erik Sietsema|Sep 7, 2022

Throughout the summer, and for two more weeks, the Havre Chamber of Commerce has hosted a farmers market. The market itself happens right in the town square on the Hi-Line, on the edge of the downtown area. My wife and I decided to check it out this past Saturday as a day out together. The Market itself featured a couple dozen vendors and live music. You can find anything from jewelry to art to fresh produce there, making browsing the various booths an enjoyable experience on its own. The real...
