  • Provider Changes at Big Sandy Medical Center

    Ron Wiens|Sep 4, 2024

It’s been years since Big Sandy had a full-time doctor attending to the medical needs of our community. Why is that? The simple answer is the need for doctors exceeds the supply of doctors in the country. This allows doctors the privilege to be particular about where they want to live, if they wish to take call overnight on weekends and/or holidays, and how much they want to be paid for their services. The challenge for communities trying to recruit in this highly competitive market becomes justifying a move through pay, activities, spousal e...

    Jessica Ophus|Aug 21, 2024

On August 6, the Mix, a Billings radio station, posted an article stating that two of the fastest ERs in the nation were located in Montana. A law firm in Georgia, compiled in and out times of over 4000 hospitals in the nation, and discovered the McCone County Health Center in Circle, MT has the 10th fastest time. And your local facility, the one that was built for the community, by the community, the facility that has been standing for over 65 years, the Big Sandy Medical Center, has the 4th...

  • 2024 Chouteau County Fair in the books

    Zoe Merrill|Aug 21, 2024

As I parked my car, I couldn't help but smile at the sight of a couple of fair rides, all free to ride on Thursday night! The fair is a place for kids and adults alike, a place where everyone can have fun. There's something about seeing kids enjoying themselves that brings a smile to everyone's face. The 4-H clubs had to have their animals there on Wednesday, but the opening day was on Thursday, with entries due that afternoon and judging starting in the livestock building. Most food booths...

  • Help Erik raise money to fight Kids Cancer

    Erik Sietsema|Aug 21, 2024

Every summer, I take part in the Great Cycle Challenge, the largest cycling event in the country to raise money to fight Children's Cancer. Many in the community have seen me peddling out on Kenilworth Road, Judith Landing, on the highway or around town to tick off miles toward my distance goals. Your generosity has helped me raise over $3,000 for the Children's Cancer Research Fund. This year, I am asking my friends, neighbors, family, and community to help me raise more than ever before. In th...

  • Big Sandy Skate Jam Weekend was a Blast

    Zoe Merrill|Aug 21, 2024

Skate Park Jam was once again a bustling event, with an even more significant presence of families and kids, making it a genuinely inclusive gathering. The participation of world-famous skaters added to the excitement. On Saturday morning, Randy Katen, a pro skater since 1977, generously shared his skating tips with all the kids. The skate park was a generous donation from Jeff Ament, Pearl Jam, who was also present. It's amazing how far people come. One always comes from Brazil, and two came...

  • Soft Opening of Rural Health Clinic

    Jessica Ophus|Aug 14, 2024

After weather delays, parts delays, contractor delays, and a myriad of other barriers, the Big Sandy Rural Health Clinic opened its doors to patients for the first time Monday, August 5th. The long awaited soft opening came with a few expected hiccups that morning. There were some issues with the telephones and the computer system that caused the biggest stress. Clinic Manager, Suzy Labuda, with her team Abbey Sandlin and Morgan Simpson, and providers Krystyl Kulbeck, PA-C and Heath Horton, FNP...

Blaine Ophus was sworn in as a council member on August 8 at the start of the monthly meeting, replacing Danielle Weaver, who resigned. Sarah Strissel from Bear Paw Development was present at the meeting to discuss the removal of the old Motel on the main street. There are rules concerning removing asbestos and lead-paste paint that must be strictly followed. The city needs some in-kind contribution, which is still being determined. She reported that they were present in Big Sandy that day to...

  • Help wanted for the Moutnaineer

    Erik Sietsema|Aug 14, 2024

2,627 weekly newspapers in America shuttered their doors between 2004 and 2023. The rise of internet news sources, increased costs of doing business, and other factors have decimated the print media industry. It's not unusual for new technologies to push older ones out of the marketplace. However, the slow disappearance of local newspapers isn't quite the same as the disappearance of the horse drawn buggy industry when the automobile industry drove them from the market. Small town newspapers...

  • A Tern or a Gull?

    Ron Wiens|Aug 7, 2024

( I welcome being corrected. I am not a knowledgeable bird watcher. I did try to research the bird and received poor information) When picking up the paper last week, I saw the article on the Artic Tern’s visiting Big Sandy. Of course, as a birder, it immediately caught my eye. If in fact, we had Artic Terns in our wheat fields, every birder in a five-state area would be here right now getting a picture of this rare event; which wouldn’t be bad for the local food establishments until they found out what was easily mistaken for Artic Terns (un...

  • The combine is out

    Aug 7, 2024

Big Sandy is an agricultural community. Those whose farm businesses depend on a combine understand the development of one of the most essential pieces of farm equipment. If you aren’t a farmer, you need to understand the value of a combine to farmers. A new combine price can vary depending on size, but for argument’s sake, I’m going with $700,000 for a new combine. That does not include the header, which cuts the grain and moves it to the conveyor belt inside the combine. A new header costs $125,000, but depending on the size of the heade...

The outage will take place for the entire week of August 5th through the 9th. As you are aware, HCE had a 30-hour unplanned outage back in April. Luckily, that failure did not cause irreparable damage and HCE was able to make temporary repairs and reenergize the transformer. To mitigate the risk of possible catastrophic failure, HCE needs to perform additional...

  • Senior Center makes changes

    Zoe Merrill|Jul 31, 2024

At its regular annual meeting, the Big Sandy Senior Center voted to raise its meals to $7.00. This was necessary to cover the cost of food and supplies, which kept going up. They could also use donations of any kind because donations are a key factor for keeping the center running. While monetary donations are greatly appreciated, there are other diverse ways to contribute. The following items were mentioned: Eggs, vegetables, powdered lemonade, coffee, tea, toilet paper, trash bags, dish soap, computer paper, file folders, file hangers, pens,...
