  • Help wanted for the Moutnaineer

    Erik Sietsema|Aug 14, 2024

2,627 weekly newspapers in America shuttered their doors between 2004 and 2023. The rise of internet news sources, increased costs of doing business, and other factors have decimated the print media industry. It's not unusual for new technologies to push older ones out of the marketplace. However, the slow disappearance of local newspapers isn't quite the same as the disappearance of the horse drawn buggy industry when the automobile industry drove them from the market. Small town newspapers...

  • A Tern or a Gull?

    Ron Wiens|Aug 7, 2024

( I welcome being corrected. I am not a knowledgeable bird watcher. I did try to research the bird and received poor information) When picking up the paper last week, I saw the article on the Artic Tern’s visiting Big Sandy. Of course, as a birder, it immediately caught my eye. If in fact, we had Artic Terns in our wheat fields, every birder in a five-state area would be here right now getting a picture of this rare event; which wouldn’t be bad for the local food establishments until they found out what was easily mistaken for Artic Terns (un...

  • The combine is out

    Aug 7, 2024

Big Sandy is an agricultural community. Those whose farm businesses depend on a combine understand the development of one of the most essential pieces of farm equipment. If you aren’t a farmer, you need to understand the value of a combine to farmers. A new combine price can vary depending on size, but for argument’s sake, I’m going with $700,000 for a new combine. That does not include the header, which cuts the grain and moves it to the conveyor belt inside the combine. A new header costs $125,000, but depending on the size of the heade...

The outage will take place for the entire week of August 5th through the 9th. As you are aware, HCE had a 30-hour unplanned outage back in April. To mitigate the risk of possible catastrophic failure, HCE needs to perform additional...

    Zoe Merrill|Jul 31, 2024

At its regular annual meeting, the Big Sandy Senior Center voted to raise its meals to $7.00. This was necessary to cover the cost of food and supplies, which kept going up. They could also use donations of any kind because donations are a key factor for keeping the center running. While monetary donations are greatly appreciated, there are other diverse ways to contribute. The following items were mentioned: Eggs, vegetables, powdered lemonade, coffee, tea, toilet paper, trash bags, dish soap, computer paper, file folders, file hangers, pens,...

Horticultural Tips for August Below are some rules of thumb when tending vegetables, lawns, flowers and trees during the month of August. • Renovate strawberries by mowing a minimum of every three years. Some people mow their strawberries every year following fruit production. Be sure to set the mower high enough to mow the leaves. Mowing too low may damage the crowns and kill the plant. • Topdress strawberries after harvest with a complete fertilizer like 16-16-16. • Pinch the tops of indeterminate tomatoes and reduce watering to promo...

  • Waterwise Yard starts this fall

    Zoe Merrill|Jul 31, 2024

With the recent hot weather, the right time to discuss how to have a nice lawn without using so much water is now. What is a Waterwise lawn, and how does it work? There is and will continue to be a battle about who owns the water in our state. Working for change is essential because the planet is worth the effort. My 100-year-old uncle Les Rutledge said, "Do what you can while you can. It is one lawn, one neighborhood at a time." With the help of Waterwise Project LLC, he created a...

  • Arctic Tern arrived at Big Sandy

    Zoe Merrill|Jul 31, 2024

While driving to and from Big Sandy, I noticed large flocks of what looked like small white birds. I had to find out what they were because I had never seen them in our area before. I researched at the All About Birds Organization and Audubon sites. "The Arctic Tern is a small, slender gray-and-white bird with angular wings, the Arctic Tern is well known for its long yearly migration. It travels from its Arctic breeding grounds to Antarctica, where it enjoys the Antarctic summer, covering...

  • Things to do in the area: the Great Falls farmers market

    Erik Sietsema|Jul 24, 2024

The Great Falls Farmers Market offers an interesting outdoor shopping and dining options. The Market is held on Saturdays from 8:30 AM to 1 PM through the end of September. The city blocks off Park Drive from the corner of Park and Central Ave to the intersection on First Street for the market, which extends into the parks on either side of the road. The Market draws large crowds most weekends from all over the area and Canada. • Rabies found in Hill and Cascade Counties

    Jul 24, 2024

It’s July and I just took our dog, Chuckie, to the vet to get caught up on his vaccinations. Time just gets away from me. So, I thought I’d put out a reminder for those of you who love their animals. I got this information from our local vet, Erica Chauvet DMV at CountrySide Veterinary Service. She sent me information from American Veterinary Medical Association How can I help control rabies? • Have your veterinarian vaccinate your dogs, cats, ferrets, and select horses and livestock. Your veterinarian will advise you on the recommended or re...

  • Beat the Heat

    Jessica Ophus|Jul 24, 2024

Did you know people over 50 are encouraged to see their Primary Care Provider every year? Why would you need to go to the doctor yearly if you’re healthy and feel fine? If you’re not sick, don’t go, right? Even if you do get sick once in a while, if some cold medicine can help, there’s no reason to visit the doctor ever, right? Not quite. These visits are called preventative and are an opportunity to catch any pending issues that may lead to illness and failure in your body. Just like you change your engine oil routinely or brush your teeth d...

  • Mountaineer Update

    Jul 10, 2024

What are you doing with the Mountaineer? I’m often asked what’s happening. I am going to try my best to get more ads in the next two months. I honestly believe the Mountaineer is an important tool to help everyone in town stay connected. It’s not just a paper; it’s a living record of our history, over a hundred years. I don’t want to sell it or close the doors, and I will be working diligently to ensure I don’t have to. However, this paper isn’t just mine, or the town of Big Sandy, it is something I gave to the Lord to use. I will do my be...
