  • Update on 60's Class get together

    Oct 6, 2021

Some alumni felt that 2025 was a bit too far to see fellow classmates. Way back in March of this year a plan was hatched by Sharon Broesder Casey (class of 64) for a gathering on Chili Feed weekend. They are still planning to attend the Chili Feed, Friday, October 8th. On Saturday, October 9th the Senior Center will open at 9 a.m. for friends and family to gather, visit and reminisce the day away. Cow Patti’s food truck will NOT be available as once planned. This is not and exclusive Sixties party. Come visit. 50’s, and 70’s come on down and s...

Winter Squash – Quick and Easy Prep is Possible Spaghetti, pumpkin, acorn, butternut, hubbard, buttercup are all delicious and nutritious squash varieties to include in fall and winter meals. Do you enjoy eating them but put off fixing them for a meal because of the dreaded preparation? Do you have a difficult time peeling and cutting them raw? The solution is either roasting in the oven or, my personal preference, pressure cooking. Whether you have a stove top or an electric pressure cooker, you will get the same great results. The d...

  • Covid Update for Montana

    Zoe Merrill|Sep 29, 2021

COVID has been one of the most divisive subjects in our community. It has divided close friends and family members. COVID, the use of masks and vaccines, has separated our community into two camps. That is why I struggled to tell the story again; however, there is information that we need to consider as a community family before we continue to go forward with our health. As of Monday, September 27, 20 active cases in Chouteau County have been reported. We also know there are some people with COVID-related symptoms that were not diagnosed....

Fall Management of Cheatgrass in Fallow Cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum), also commonly called downy brome, is a problematic weed in winter wheat and in rangeland throughout Montana. Cheatgrass typically germinates in the autumn, overwinters, and produces seed by mid-summer. The cheatgrass life cycle is similar to winter wheat which makes it a problematic weed in winter wheat fields. Cheatgrass is an abundant seed producer. Seed is only viable for one to two years in the seedbank. Cheatgrass typically germinates from late August to early October...

  • Chauvet's auctioning off 23 round hay bales to benefit Big Sandy Ambulance & ER

    Shane Chauvet|Sep 29, 2021

Big Sandy Chili Feed has always been filled with fun memories of firetruck rides, homecoming and a chance to see your friends and neighbors. I do not think I have missed one in almost forty years. However this years Chili Feed has a different meaning to me than years past. This year when I go, it will not only be the past memories in my mind, but a new purpose to also say thanks! I was involved in an accident in July that nearly amputated my arm. The Big Sandy ambulance crew and the ER saved my life and my arm. My family and I wanted to give...

Although September is almost behind us, I could not miss my opportunity to put in my annual plug for this month being National Sewing Month. This past year brought new sewing enthusiasts into the world of sewing as well as those who used to sew back. Motivations of why people sew vary from relieving stress to a way of saving money, although many would say it is an expensive hobby. If you have not caught the sewing bug yet but have been thinking about it, here is some information to get you started. If you are worried about the cost of sewing,...

  • The Public House has delicious BBQ in Fort Benton

    Erik Sietsema|Sep 22, 2021

If you're looking for delicious barbecue in the area, you can't go wrong visiting The Public House in Fort Benton. The Public House offers a range of smoked meat options, prepared by their resident barbecue chef, Alex Salazar. Alex has been cooking at The Wake Cup (and more recently at its sister restaurant, The Public House), but he has been smoking food most of his life. I met Alex when he competed in the Big Sandy Church of God Brisket Cook-Off 2 years ago. Then, he was just beginning to...

  • Shamrock Hotel a part of Big Sandy History for over a 100 years

    Erik Sietsema|Sep 22, 2021

After 9 years in the town of Big Sandy, my family and I took a major step toward becoming permanent Big Sandy residents by purchasing a house of our own. We feel particularly blessed to have bought the Brumwell's house as they retired and moved closer to their kids. Not only have we bought a neat home, but we are now living in a piece of Big Sandy history. The newly dubbed "Sietsema House" bears all sorts of signs that it is over a century old, from the ornate "old west hinges and moldings, to... Full story

The following article and study were completed by Ben Hauptman, MSU Extension Granite County. In summer 2020 the active ingredient indaziflam (RejuvraTM) was approved by the Environmental Protection Agency for use on rangelands, CRP, and natural areas. Indaziflam’s mode of action inhibits cellulose biosynthesis in seedlings, making it an effective pre-emergent herbicide for annuals such as cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum), a non-native winter annual grass. Cheatgrass is the most widespread invasive plant in the western U.S., and it is p...

  • Erik is fundraising for kids' cancer research

    Erik Sietsema|Sep 22, 2021

A couple of months ago, I wrote an article about my upcoming participation in the Great Cycle Challenge. I am about a week away from finishing my fourth year of riding in the largest cycling event in the United States to raise money for fighting kids' cancer. I committed to raising $500 and riding 200 miles during the month of September. So far, I am about halfway through my miles and have nearly reached my goal for fundraising. Though I have almost cleared my goal, that doesn't need to be the...

  • Lawrence B. Green 1929-2021; A man of pebbles

    Steve Sibra|Sep 15, 2021

Someone once criticized me, telling me, everything with you is a story. And I think he was right – but I don't take it as a criticism, I see it as acknowledgement of a gift, to be shared. This is my story of Lawrence Green. Lawrence Green was nothing much, really. He was diminutive, he did not stand out in a crowd, unless the crowd happened to be a brawl, in which case, Lawrence was probably knocking the stuffing out of someone twice his size. Some would like that about Lawrence. But he did n...
