These girls are on to STATE!!! The way they have battled these last two weeks to prove that they have what it takes is admirable. I say this a lot, but I will repeat it. These girls have heart! Plain and simple. (And great coaching)! For a team to face adversity like they have the last 2 weeks and how they overcome it and WIN....baffles me. The grit, the teamwork, the hard work, the hustle, and the heart! I am so proud to be a Lady Pioneer volleyball fan! This past weekend at Divisionals, the...
I am almost speechless about this Lady Pioneer volleyball team...I have watched a lot of sports in my life, and I genuinely believe these girls should've been featured on ESPN's SportsCenter Top 10 after their District performance! These girls are made of something special. And you know you can see it every time they are on the court. But because I also know that it's not just about how hard those girls work, I have also to say that they are the way they are because of coaching. Nowadays, so...

Despite the early lead by the Box Elder Bears, the Pioneer football team demonstrated remarkable resilience and determination. The score may not fully capture the intensity of the Pioneers’ battle, especially when they had to fight hard for every yard after falling behind early. It’s a testament to their spirit and dedication to the game. When I asked Coach Tucker how he felt about the game, he said, “I thought the boys played a fairly good game. We didn’t capitalize on our first few offensive drives, which didn’t help. We played well in t...

The Pioneer football team had a rare occurrence this past week, and had to finish the 2nd half of their last game (from chili feed) against Valier. The score to start the 2nd half was 38-6. The Pioneers were originally scheduled to play Heart Butte this past weekend, but Heart Butte canceled their entire season. The Pioneers picked right back up where they left off on Friday night. The Pioneers started off with some big tackles against Wes Cox and Ryder Galbavy, then followed up with a nice tackle from Karter Jurenka as well. The Pioneer...
What a crazy ending to a great game by the Pioneer football team. The second half of the Chili Feed game will be played Monday night (October 7th), so we will have that written up for you in next week's paper. But in the meantime, the Pioneers had a very dominating game against Valier and were up 38-6 when the game got rescheduled due to the wind knocking the power out. Wes Cox started the Pioneers off with a few runs, getting 10 yards, 25 yards, and 12 yards. Aidan Morsette also ran for a 1st...

The first set’s biggest lead was 4 points by the Lady Pioneers, but that didn’t last long as both teams had great comeback moments. The Lady Pioneers won the first set by 2 with a score of 28-26. The 2nd set was just as entertaining and exciting! The Lady Pio...
The Pioneers hosted the Power/Dutton/Brady Titans this past weekend but ended up losing 28-51. Coach Tucker Taylor said, "The guys fought tough but ultimately came up short. We've got to get better on the defensive side of the ball, and our tackling needs to improve. The boys played hard. We're just fairly young, and it shows at times. I'm still learning as well. It's my first time as a head varsity football coach, so I'm learning every day." The Pioneers received the kickoff but had a quick...

The Pioneer football team put on a show offensively this past weekend. Karter Jurenka scored seven touchdowns in a big win against North Star. The final score was similar to a basketball game: 74-50. Coach Taylor said, “The offense played pretty darn well. Our special teams at times were a weapon and at times let us down. We’ve got to get better in that department. The boys played good defense at times but our tackling needs to improve. Karter Jurneka had a good game. He had seven touchdowns and an interception. Dolan Sunchild had a nice goa...
Despite the Pioneers' loss against Hot Springs this past weekend, their resilience and hard work on the field were truly commendable. The final score of 0-46 doesn't fully reflect the intense battle they fought. The field conditions, muddy and slippery, posed a challenge for both teams. The Pioneers, however, showed true grit and their effort was a delight to watch. They had a great start to the game and used much of the game clock to drive the field. There was a nice pass from Quinn Rodewald...
The Lady Pioneer Varsity team played in Box Elder this past week. The ladies won in 3 sets with scores of 25-11, 25-11, and 25-3. In the 2nd set, the Lady Bears tried to stay close to the Lady Pioneers, staying within 2 points until the Lady Pioneers pulled away by outscoring the Lady Bears 8-1 on a great run. The Lady Pioneers continue to work at improving, and it's enjoyable to watch them play as a team and fine-tune their skills. The team and individual stats are as follows: 10 team digs, wit...

The Pioneers are 1-1 after losing their first game with a score of 0-48 against a mature Bridger football team. The Pioneers then turned around, played North Toole, and beat them 51-7 this past Saturday night. Both games have been away, but the Pioneers bring home the action against Hot Springs this Friday. Okay, I'm going to say this upfront: This team is worth watching. Come and enjoy the Big Sandy Girls' skills and help support them. Their first matches are away on August 30th at North Star and August 31st at Belt for a tournament. The first home matches are September 12th against Highwood and September 19th against CJI. I walked into the Big Sandy gym, and the first thing I noticed was that the girls were exhausted and sweating. I said, "Hard practice," and they said yes! At the beginning of...
Some believe we are in a rebuilding year, but Coach Tucker Tayor answered that question right up front. We have lost a lot of talented football players over the last three years, some of whom are playing football just down the road, but head coach Tucker Taylor believes there are athletes ready to step up and, given the chance, will do well for the Pioneers. There are four seniors this year: Sonny Phillips, Darrell Sunchild, Ryder Galbavy, and Severin Heimbigner. Although he cannot play this...
When I stepped outside my car at the MSU Northern football parking lot, I was surprised to hear the players cheering loudly. Realizing they were looking forward to playing football this year was fun. Three of the players are from Big Sandy Pioneers, but what's truly fascinating is that four of them are cousins! Braydon Cline, Wylee Snapp, Lane Demontiney, and Crawford Terry share a unique bond. Lane also happens to be a cousin to Joe Quinn Demontiney. Each player has a unique role on the team:...
On August 4th, Tannin Baumann stepped into the MMA arena for the first time. His debut took place at The Northern Winz, in an outdoor tent area. Tannin's journey to this moment was marked by six months of rigorous training, a testament to his unwavering dedication to the sport. Tannin informed me, "It's a mix of boxing, kickboxing, Jiu-Jitsu, wrestling, and grappling. It's just a mix of a bunch of different fighting techniques." Tannin has found that his wrestling knowledge is a big part of MMA....
Recently, wrestling camp came to Big Sandy. Kyle Rodewald held a four-day wrestling camp in the city hall. It was scheduled at the school, but the electrical company decided that was the week they were coming to town, and all the electricity at the high school would be turned off. The wrestling mats covered the city hall floor well, but it did get hot in there towards the end of the day. Kyle told me, "I think the youngest is kindergarten up to seniors," for a total of 34 kids. They came from...

The Big Sandy Barracudas visited Columbia Falls last weekend for the West Divisionals meet. By Zoe Merrill I was finally able to attend a Big Sandy swim meet. Being there reminded me of how much fun they are to watch. The sport is more than the development of athletes; it is also about families playing together with other families around the state. The swim team was in Conrad last weekend, with a huge park surrounding the outdoor pool. The weather was perfect, the pool warm, and the swimmers worked hard competing. There were 10 teams at this swim meet, including Big Sandy. They...
