The Pioneers Volleyball team had a hectic week. Winning some and losing some but overall showing a great display of talent and determination. They lost to Chinook on Tuesday, won against Centerville Thursday, then placed 4th in a 12-team tournament on Saturday. Big Sandy vs. Chinook Although the Chinook team won the match with a 3-set sweep, they had to work for it after the first set. Chinook dominated the first set on the home court until the end when the Pioneer Ladies seemed to pull things together and show they were as good a team as...
Big Sandy defeated Cascade in their game Tuesday September 21 and according to Coach Brittany McKenney the Cascade game was an exciting win for the Varsity Lady Pioneers. With a triumphant final score of 56-6, the Pioneer offense broke their slow first quarter pattern by putting 27 points on the board while their Defense kept the Warriors to 0. A pleased coach Jappe remarked that "Everybody got to play." Most of them got to play because there was little depth on the bench due to injuries or illness of starting players. Jappe felt, "We did alright in the first quarter this time. They persevered, and everyone got in. They don't always get in, so it's all good. "...
It may seem peculiar to be reading an article about track in September when athletic awards are handed out in May. However, with the track season in full swing at the time of the athletic awards ceremony near the end of the school year, the track team has yet to compete in their biggest meets of the year. It's often difficult to predict which athletes will shine when it comes to the most important meets. As a result, the track coaches decided to wait until the Booster Club Kickoff to recognize...

The Pioneer Ladies Volleyball team beat Hays in three sets on Friday night. According to Coach Brittany McKenney “It was a good confidence boost for the girls to get another win under our belt. Keira Oats really stepped up to the plate and led the team with nine kills. She is getting stronger every time she steps foot on the court. It’s very exciting especially since she’s only an 8th grader! Overall, we played well and really started establishing more of an offense. The team finished with 30 kills.” Big Sandy vrs. Pioneers won the toss and chose to receive. They got off to a slow start and had to turn the ball over to the Savage team who managed to move quickly downfield, however, the Pioneer defense stopped them at the door and took over the ball at the 20-yard line. Unfortunatly, offensively the Pioneers couldn't pull it together and were forced to punt. It wasn't until the end of the first quarter that things started to click for the Pioneer offense when Cooper Taylor danced his way past two defenders...
By Carolyn Mosier The Lady Pioneers won their first regular season match against the Box Elder Lady Bears, winning all three sets. Coach McKenney was pleased with her team’s performance overall and had this to say. “We served well with 15 aces. Eva Wagoner had a great game getting six out of those aces. We had a pretty good defense for the most part. With so many free balls, we only had 21 digs which is still fine. Angie Sant had a good game offensively with five kills. It was nice seeing her being stronger at the net for us.’ “The second...

I really like how close it was...
With the Hot Springs game going into a holiday weekend, no Live Stream and not being able to attend the game myself it was hard to catch up with anyone to get stats but I was lucking enough to be able to interview one of the team captains Rusty Gasvoda, which I must say was an absolute pleasure. Gasvoda said he felt that the Pioneers had a much better experience than they had against #2 ranked White Sulphur last week. Against Hot Springs they got off to a slow start and couldn't get much going...
By Carolyn Mosier Belt Tournament Results At the Belt tournament the Lady Pioneers had the opportunity to play five teams but not like a normal volleyball match when each set goes to 25 points usually taking the best three out of five. Instead, according to Coach McKenney, in the Belt tournament they had teams lined out exactly who you were playing and you played them in two sets to just 21 so all in all they played five different teams to two sets to 21 and there were no real championship...
