The Pioneers competed in two track meets this week, the Fairfield Belt Invitational and the Cascade Top 8. Thirty one teams were invited to the Fairfield-Belt meet, which featured the majority of the Class C and B Northern Divisions. Dorothea Merrill has waited two years to be a part of the state champion Big Sandy Barracudas swim team. Registration is now opened for this year's team. You must be five years of age and able to swim the length of the swimming pool before you can join the team. The registration fee is $50 per swimmer or for a family there is a $125 cap. The Pioneer track athletes competed in two meets this past week: The Cal Wearly Memorial in Havre and the Choteau Acantha in Choteau. The Havre track provided its typical cold and windy conditions throughout the day. Despite the weather, the boys team placed 7th of 28 teams. Reinhard Bold has been wrestling since kindergarten. This year he is in the seventh grade. That means he has already committed 8 years to his sport. This year he won the Montana State AAU wrestling in the 125-pound weight class. This allowed him to travel to Des Moines Iowa to wrestle in the U.S.A AAU National Middle School Tournament. The Pioneer track team competed in Cut Bank this past weekend in their first track meet of the season. Despite frigid morning conditions that postponed the jumping events for two hours, the boys came home with a second place finish in the meet. Leading scoring for the Pioneers were Kade Strutz with a first place finish in the discus and second place in the shot, and Brock Proulx, who finished first in the shot and second in the discus. March 1 at 5:30 10 different school will bring their grade school children for a wrestling tournament here in Big Sandy. If you want to get a good seat you have to go. Schools attending are Malta, Hays, Chinook, Havre, Fort Benton, Chester, Cut Bank, Shelby, and some Great Falls. Friday night the Pioneers knocked out the North Star Knights 56-46. Connor Schnabel, Dillin Geyer, and Hayden Axtman were 2-0 on the night, Colter Ball and Brock Hanford both got a win each at Fairfield. It has been some time since the Big Sandy Pioneers could say that both the boys and girls basketball teams began the season 2-0, but they did just that this past weekend. The girls picked up a 42-27 win over the Dutton/Brady Diamondbacks on Friday led by junior Amanda Cline's 14 points.
