The Mountaineer didn't have room to publish the results of the last basketball games in the Christmas edition, so we present a brief rundown of the games here. Against DGSG, the Big Sandy Varsity Girls lost 61-69, and the Big Sandy Varsity Boys lost 51-56. In those games, Lane Demontiney was the top scorer for both teams with 28 points, but DGSG had every player score but one. Eyon Sherburn scored 10, and Ryder Galbavy 8. In the girl's game, Eva Yeadon had 30 points, Keira Galbavy 12, Alex...
It's the perfect article to start the New Year-a true example of doing something special for your friends. I didn't even know Levi would play basketball this year until I saw him play in the game. It was then that I looked at the Pioneer roster and saw we had another senior playing basketball. I asked him when he last played, and he said he played his Freshman year and then quit. So why has he started to play this year? Levi said, "This year, seniors weren't available." He smiled and said, "I'm...
The Pioneers had another successful weekend of wrestling. With a warmup on Thursday night at Fort Benton, the girls’ and boy’s teams made a strong showing at the CMR Holiday Classic. The Holiday Classic is an all-class AA to C across Montana. All weight classes wrestled in 64-man brackets. The Big Sandy girls team placed 15th out of 57 teams overall. Out of Class C girls, Big Sandy girls were 2nd to Poplar by only 2 points. All done by 8th graders and a freshman. Sophomore Leah LePennit wrestled strong and showed continued improvement over las...
Travis Baumann, Head Coach wanted to recognize the JV’s efforts “We started the day off with the JV girls playing an excellent game. They passed the ball very well on offense, and played aggressive defense. It was an amazing game to be a part of. It was one of the best games I have witnessed so it truly was amazing to be on the bench with Coach Jurenka to witness it. They were led on both offense and defense by Alex Worral who had a monster game, and it was a foretelling of how she was to play all weekend.” The Lady Pioneers had a great weeke...
The Pioneer boys had a tough weekend, losing both games, but there was a lot of light in both games, and some positive things happened. They still fought hard, and battled until the very end. They started the weekend against Cascade, then turned around and played Turner the next night. The first quarter started great for the Pioneers, with Lane Demontiney knocking down a 3-pointer and the Pioneers applying their ¾ court pressure. Lane also had a great take and another deep 3-pointer to...
The Pioneer basketball looks different from last year’s State contenders. They have two seniors this year, not just one, as reported earlier, with a team of 14 players. There are only four upperclassmen, and the rest comprise a team of younger players. I will tell you, though, that this team worked hard and tried to correct the mistakes that came along. The Pioneers showed true heart but came up with a loss in their first game against Dutton/Brady 48-74. The Pioneers then turned around the next day, played North Toole, and shot the lights o...
It’s that time of the year, BASKETBALL. Pioneer teams traveled to the Hi-Line this past weekend to participate in the Hi-Line Tournament. The Lady Pioneers first played North Toole and won 58-43, then turned around and played Augusta the next day and won 58-16. The Lady Pioneers start the year off 2-0. Travis Baumann, head coach of the Lady Pioneers, said, “In our first game of the year on Friday against Sunburst from the 10C, we came out with some jitters and struggled to shoot the ball as we would have liked, but our defense played dec...
Kyle Rodewald, head coach of the Big Sandy Pioneer wrestling team, wrote, "Coach Taylor, Coach LeFurgey, and I are all very pleased with how our wrestlers have been wrestling. Our team has gone back-to-back weekends, placing every wrestler, both girls and boys, on both weekends. This past weekend in Glasgow, our boys' team did extremely well. They were 12th overall out of 27 teams but 4th out of Easter B/C Divisional teams. We were 1.5 team points behind both Colstrip and Glasgow, who were tied...
The Big Sandy Wrestlers went to their first wrestling invitational and excelled. Tucker Taylor, assistant coach this year, sent me the following information: "The kids wrestled really well at the first tournament of the year! Harley Labuda won the championship at 120 pounds. Those wrestling for the championship but taking 2nd are Quinn Rodewald, boys 120 pound, Randi Hardman girls 107 pounds, and Garrett LeFurgey boys 132 pounds. Wesley Cox took 3rd at 157 pounds and Samuel Cox took 4th at 205....
Rhett Simanton, Co-head coach of the boys’ basketball, said he was “Excited for the season to begin again and hoped to compete hard this season and continue to get better every day.” Fourteen boys are out for the BB program this year. Lane Demontiney is the only senior. Ryne LaBuda, the other head coach, said, “I’m excited about this group of guys because while we lost a lot of talent and experience from the group we had last year, we have a talented group of young boys with great attitudes and work hard. We kept a couple of guys that play...
Lane Demontiey is the only senior on this boy's basketball team. Last year, at the end of the season, he was planning on having four senior teammates. One moved to live with his father, one got injured playing football, and one decided not to play. He said, "It feels good and bad at the same time. We are missing a lot of people that I thought would be with me this year, but I'm really excited to have the opportunity to work with these younger kids and have a good year with them." Lane has taken...
The Lady Pioneers volleyball season unfortunately came to an end this past week at Divisionals. They played a tough Belt team to start off with and lost in 3 sets; the next morning, Big Sandy played Simms and lost in four sets to the Lady Tigers. Both games showed some hard work and great communication from the Lady Pioneers. They did have some errors, but their grit and tenacity were also fully displayed. These ladies should be very proud of themselves for a great season and for showing true...
The Big Sandy Pioneers faced off against Westby Grenora (MonDak) Thunder in the first playoff game of the season this past weekend on a wintery fall day in Big Sandy. The temperature was 18 degrees with a windchill of 6, with snow on the field. The Thunder ended the Pioneers season by beating them 30-6 on the Pioneers home field. The Pioneers were without senior leader Cooper Taylor due to injury against CJI. The Pioneers finished the season with only two losses, but both came at the end of the...
The Lady Pioneers headed into Districts this last weekend as the number two team. Things unfortunately didn't go the way they had wanted, but they are still heading to Divsionals! They first played Box Elder and won, then faced off against Fort Benton and lost, then on to Highwood, who they beat, and lastly faced Centerville, but also lost that game. So overall, in Districts, they went 2-2. The Lady Pioneers once again showed true talent and grit on the court, and they worked so hard in so many...
The Pioneer football team had a tough game in Chester this last weekend against CJI, losing 16-54, making it their first loss of the season. The Pioneers struggled with some missed tackles during the game as well as losing Sam Cox, Cooper Taylor and Karter Jurenka to injuries throughout the game. The Pioneers ran the ball the whole first quarter besides two pass attempts. CJI had Cooper’s number in the first quarter and didn’t allow Cooper to get more than 5 yards at a time. Every time Cooper carried the ball, he was met with a wall of CJI defe...
This last week, the Lady Pioneer volleyball team played a very tough Lady Miner team in Big Sandy. Centerville ended up winning in 5 sets, but let me tell you, these Lady Pioneers are so much fun to watch. I love watching them because they show true heart. They show that when adversity hits, they don’t quit! They have a winning mentality and do everything they can to come together as a team, and buckle down and work hard. If you still haven’t watched them, you need to go see them at Districts, because to watch them is really what sports are...
The Lady Pioneers started the weekend off with a great win against Box Elder. Big Sandy started with the 1st serve and set the standard right from the beginning with an ace by Eva Yeadon. The score would go back and forth point after point, with some great kills From Eva, and Keira Galbavy. Eva also had a great tip to put them ahead 14-13. The Lady Pioneers tried to pull ahead, but the Lady Bears stayed in there with their scrappy plays, putting them in front by one point 20-19. The Lady Pioneers knuckled down, played some great defense, and ca...
This last Friday night was chili feed, and the Pioneer football team played the North Star Knights. The Pioneers ran away with the game-winning big, with a final score of 66-7. The Pioneers started with the ball first and ran the ball up the field with handoffs to Lane Demontiney, and Cooper Taylor. The Pioneers faced a 4th down and 8 to go early on, but after a toss to Lane, who threw to Cooper, the Pioneers scored first with a score of 6-0. On the kickoff, Wes Cox, and Karter Jurenka both had...
Last week the Predictor said Big Sandy would lose. The Pioneer football team was supposed to have a “hard time beating” the Dutton-Brady Titans. Well, with senior leaders Cooper Taylor and Jake Darlington back in the lineup, the Pioneers proved those people wrong by beating the Titans with a score of 48-8. Coach Tucker Taylor said, “The boys finally put together a full team effort in the victory over power. It was good to see the team perform well in an important game. We’ll need those same efforts in the coming weeks.” The Pioneers started t...
Brittany McKenney Big Sandy Pioneer Volleyball coach said, "This past week was huge for our team! We beat Fort Benton on their home court, which was an exciting first for us. Our girls busted their butts, and it paid off. The next night we beat Highwood in a clean sweep on our Senior Night. Overall, it was a successful week and I am very proud of these girls. While we still have plenty to improve on, I'm excited about where we are at. We only have 3 matches left, before tournament time! We are...
Three weeks ago, the Nebraska women's volleyball team set a world record for women's sports attendance with an outstanding 92,003 people. I absolutely loved hearing this story and seeing the clips of all the people in the stands supporting this women's volleyball team which led me to think, if you have not seen the Lady Pioneer Volleyball Team yet, you need to! These ladies are showing just how tough they are mentally and physically every week. They are overcoming adversity, and showing you...
Even with a Big Sandy Pioneer win of 36-30, this weekend's game against the Box Elder Bears was grueling! The Big Sandy Pioneers were relentless in their effort and hard work, proving why they are still number one in the state. Without 2 key senior leaders (Jake Darlington and Cooper Taylor) on the field, the Pioneers proved how multifaceted they are and what true grit is! The Pioneers had some players step up big time, and every player left it all on the field to come away with a win against...
The Big Sandy Pioneer football team had a bit of a challenge with the Valier Panthers this last weekend. Senior Cooper Taylor had limited playing time due to an injury, but Coach said, “He should be ready to go this week.” The Panthers had the ball first to start the game, didn’t have much success at first with running the ball, and turned over the ball on downs. The Pioneers started the game with a couple carries from Lane Demontiney getting first downs, but Big Sandy threw an interception on a deep ball into the endzone. Valier had a great...
The Lady Pioneers played a doubleheader against Hays winning both, and also played CJI this last week losing a tough match-up. What an action-packed game from the beginning with the Pioneers winning 36-28! The Big Sandy Pioneers hosted Denton, Geyser, Stanford, and Geraldine Co-op (DGSG) Wildcats at home this past weekend, and it was a tight, well-fought battle. The Pioneers received the kickoff and ran the ball the whole first series, with great runs and yardage from Cooper Taylor. After a couple of penalties, one from the Wildcats and one from the Pioneers they finished the drive with a pass from Jake Darlington to...
