Bear Paw Meanderings

I am finding this February that the mid winter blues are much easier to chase away than many other years. Maybe it is that when writing these words it is going to be 60 above.

Now normally I would be very worried about that and worse off due to mid winter blues.

This year, I am not concerned. If my tulips come up and my peonies are showing color, that must be global warming and it is going to give me a great long growing season.

And if it gets cold and soon, I have not planted anything and will not until Good Friday so I am in good shape both ways.

One thing I have been doing is cooking more. I have been using a lot of Laened Black’s recipes that I have not looked at for years. Not only are those recipes wonderful, but they bring back warm memories of the Blacks’ on Clear Creek and that makes the mid winter blues go away quickly and I have good meals out of it too.

This is not for everyone but you might buy yourself a bottle of brandy and try it.

I pour about four fingers of brandy in a water glass before I go to bed every night. I take it up to my bedroom, get the dog and myself tucked in and sip the brandy while thinking of all the good things that happened to me that day.

And, if nothing particularly good happened to me that day, I prop myself up and admire my souvenirs that line the walls of my paneled bedroom. I have everything from Grandma Moses framed prints to Russell Christmas cards to a wonderful oil of Summit Mountain by Brieby. There are some of my own paintings in the room and a large assortment of stuffed ducks and duck decoys.

I look and sip and my souvenirs just make my room and me want to go to sleep and I am in love with everything.

Is it the brandy?

Who knows but it makes the end of my day positively delightful!

I do want to add a disclaimer. My habits protect me but they might assassinate you so be careful with things like four fingers of brandy!
