On Monday, March 14, 2016 from 6:30-8:30 pm at the Memorial Ambulance Building (810 15th St) in Fort Benton, Dr. Marsha A. Goetting, Professor and Extension Family Economic Specialist, will conduct a free presentation on estate planning. Why would one want or need to attend?
One fact of life that is very difficult for most to accept is that we are all going to die someday. Something even harder to tackle is planning for what happens to your assets and property upon your death. This topic of discussion is not one that most family members want to engage in. And, for this reason, the topic is never discussed and, then when the time comes, confusion, delay, expense, quarrelling and extreme stress becomes the focus rather than the grieving process.
You do not have to be old and/or rich to be thinking about estate planning. Estate planning is the process of arranging your affairs to meet your objectives regarding the use, conservation and distribution of your property. You’ve heard it before—you can’t take it with you. It only makes sense that what you have worked hard to build up in assets and property is distributed according to your wishes. If you do not have a plan, state and federal laws will dictate what happens to it.
A good estate plan can provide financial security, may save in income taxes, federal estate or gift taxes and other estate settlement costs, may protect family members from bitter quarrels and prevent the forced sale or disposition of a farm, ranch or family business.
If any of this has caught your attention, please attend this session with Marsha. She is very knowledgeable in this area, actively involves attendees and provides an opportunity for questions.
If you are not able to attend and you would like more information, please contact Janell at the Chouteau County Extension Office at 622-3036, janellb@montana.edu or 1308 Franklin St in Fort Benton.
