Cheryl Dee Hurd Bueno

Cheryl Dee Hurd Bueno passed away on March 8, 2016 in San Diego, CA.

Cheryl was born to Herschell D. Hurd and Lillian (Pat) McClelland in Livingston, MT on November 28, 1938. Cheryl grew up in Bozeman, MT and graduated from Gallatin County High School in 1956. She attended Montana State College in Bozeman and transferred to Michigan State University in Lansing, Michigan where she completed her degree in Police Administration in 1960.

Cheryl worked in industrial security for Montgomery Wards in Chicago, transferring to San Francisco where she simultaneously attended and graduated from San Francisco Golden Gate University of Law. She was admitted to the California State Bar Association on May 31, 1973.

Cheryl served with great distinction as Deputy District Attorney for the County of Imperial in El Centro, CA. She was the Chief Prosecutor in charge of juvenile delinquency matters. Cheryl was once affectionately dubbed "the dragon lady" due to her insistence that delinquents be fairly held accountable for their misbehavior. However, she also deeply cared for each young person and their family and advocated for the programs and services to help them rehabilitate and lead healthy and productive lives. Cheryl was a wise and inspiring leader and mentor to all of the law enforcement and probation officers, social workers, victim advocates, lawyers and judges who worked in juvenile court. Her professionalism, graceful courtesy and delightful sense of humor will never be forgotten.

Cheryl was a great seamstress, did beautiful needlepoint, loved to read and to complete challenging crossword puzzles. She traveled extensively. She loved to cruise, visiting numerous exotic places. She once celebrated a birthday in Gibraltar and was a generous, loyal friend and will be sorely missed by family and friends.

Cheryl was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Richard McClelland Hurd.

She is survived by her sister-in-law, Rosalie Hurd of Yuma, AZ and two nephews, William (Victoria) Dale Hurd of Kremlin, MT and Michael (Jamie) Wayne Hurd of Bozeman, MT as well as her great-nieces and great-nephews.

The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff who provided care for Cheryl and her special friends Mark E. Leinenweber, Joann Breeze and Efrain Macias for their wonderful support.
