From the looks of the new Big Sandy Library outwardly it is almost complete. As these words are being written, workers are working on the new sidewalk in front of the interesting new building with the small tower that compliments Main Street so well.
But, according to Marla Ray and Dee Pribyl, there is much to get completed before a grand opening can be touted this fall.
The main thing slowing things down is the wait for furniture and fixtures along with shelving.
Dee said that Carroll College had given the library some shelving but it would not work because it is double shelving and the architect's scheme of things in the new library calls for single shelving.
Marla said that all the furniture and fixtures are paid for from a grant that the library obtained just for that reason.
However, she also reminded that the library boards still need to do some fund raising to get the building completely paid for.
Dee Pribyl also reported that all the furniture and shelving has now been ordered so it is just a matter of waiting for it all to come in, get it put together and added to the old furnishings coming from the present library.
Marla Ray said that will be maybe even a community job when they move everything in the old library building into the new library.
Then the project will be done enough to celebrate with a grand opening that will do Big Sandy proud.
So, no matter that when a person drives past the library, it looks like not much is going on, both Dee and Marla said that there is a lot going on. It is just that no one sees it right now.
Dee reported that the furniture and fixtures along with shelving will be ordered soon. That would put a grand opening some time this fall.
It is exciting for all of Big Sandy to see that beautiful building spring up in the ruins of the old Kaste building. It will be even more exciting when it is completed and a person walking in the front door will see a whole bevy of young people using the whole bevy of computers to do their homework in that wonderful atmosphere.
