Pioneers scout Box Elder

The Pioneer football team had a bye week to start the season so they took the opportunity to go watch the neighboring Box Elder Bears take on Hot Springs.

The Bears finished second in all of Class C Six-Man football a season ago and Hot Springs is always a powerhouse.

The boys witnessed a shellacking that could strain any players positive attitude. A score of 75-0 shocked me a bit since the last time the Bears played Hot Springs it was the Bears victory of 42-40 and sent them to the state finals.

Just goes to show, things can change big time in one year of small town sports. Ultimately, this should raise confidence in Big Sandy for our home opener against the Bears, September 2.

It was a hot August afternoon with the tube steaks and burgers flying off the grill. Coach Ronnie Simpson said he doesn't think the Bears showed all their cards, but he and the boys got a good idea of the way the Bears offense works and where holes in the defense can be found.

Seeing the huge range of talent the boys will come up against this season it was great for the team, helping them wrap their heads around what they need to do this season to be successful.

On Friday the Sports boosters had the kickoff party with the line stretching all the way to the tennis courts showing that no matter how the seasons go, Purple and Gold pride will always stand strong behind our sports teams here in Big Sandy.
