Imagine being in a time crunch for getting a meal on the table, you pull a jar of canned chicken off the shelf, frozen vegetables (from your garden no doubt) out of the freezer, dump it all in a pot, heat and serve. Sound impossible? Uncomfortable canning your own meat? This opportunity will help you make it all a reality.
MSU Extension Chouteau County is offering a class on how to can meats and make jerky on November 17, 2016 from 11:00 am – 3:00 pm at the Big Sandy Community Church of God at 377 2nd Ave.
Laurie Lautt, Big Horn County Extension Agent, will be leading the class through a hands-on experience of canning poultry and fish. Laurie is one of our most experienced MSU Extension Agents with food preservation so we are very excited she accepted our invitation to teach the class.
In addition, we are thrilled to have Dennis Longknife, Jr., owner of Nakoda Jerky in Harlem, demonstrating how to make jerky. Class participants will receive a custom jerky kit from Dennis which includes a jerky slicing board, his blend of spices and a sample bag of his Nakoda Jerky.
We want to be sure we have enough supplies for everyone so pre-registration is required on or before November 10. The cost of the class is $20 which includes jars of the canned meat, a jerky kit and resource information to do make both on your own.
To pre-register or if you have any questions, please contact Janell Barber at 406-622-3036, janellb@montana.edu or stop by the Chouteau County Courthouse at 1308 Franklin St in Fort Benton.
