Getting By

Precautions must be taken to ensure your personal information and finances are secure when banking online.

The first important piece to look for is if the bank displays the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) logo to attest to the bank’s insurance status, especially when deciding on a new bank. You may also want to check out the Bank Find website at https://research.fdic.gov/bankfind/ to find additional information about the bank and be sure they are registered.

When accessing the bank’s website, verify the web address. Fraudulent websites might have names similar to a legitimate bank’s website. Consumers might misspell the website address or select a phony site after using an online search engine. Also, look for the “https” prefix to the web address instead of “http” (the “s” stands for secure). You may also check to see if a miniature padlock is on the screen. Look for these symbols before entering any personal information.

It is absolutely necessary that consumers protect their privacy. Banks are required to give customers a copy of the privacy policy. Reviewing the privacy policy informs consumers about how the bank handles personal information. In the privacy policy information, a bank should detail the provisions that allow consumers to opt out of the dissemination of their personal information.

When banking online, consumers should be proactive in securing their safety. Check bank accounts often. Notify the bank if there has been any mishandling. Memorize your pin number or password and use only your personal phone or computer to access the accounts. Another safety measure is to set up an alert through the bank which will notify you if the account has any activity. And, install firewall and antivirus software on your computer. You will need to keep the antivirus software updated and run it often.

The convenience of online banking is nice but do not let yourself become careless in keeping your personal information secure. Most of the points given above apply to any online transaction you may be doing.
