This year the Big Sandy Chamber of Commerce decided that instead of auctioning off craft items, they would honor Elaine Courtnage by auctioning off some things that meant a great deal to her.
The family of Elaine has started a scholarship fund at the Big Sandy High School in Elaine's honor. The scholarship is to help those going into the arts and nursing. Marlys Edmonds, speaking for the Chamber of Commerce, said that all funds from the donated items will go toward that scholarship fund.
Items include original art work, a doll, Christmas ornaments and special Christmas ornament eggs as well as Elaine's gun, a 22 mg Mossenberg model 640KB. The gun has Elaine's own scrimshaw on the handle.
All the items can be viewed any time at Agri-Prairie Insurance in Big Sandy.
After the Button Draw at the Jerry Martin Memorial Fire Hall which is just after the grand parade, those items that Elaine cherished will be auctioned off.
Lorna Hafliger, Elaine's daughter said that the family donated these items that meant so much to Elaine to get some funds for their family scholarship.
Hafliger especially told how important the doll was to Elaine as she and her mother made many of those dolls through the years. Some went to family members after the death of Elaine but this special one was reserved for the scholarship fund.
"I hope everyone will come and enjoy the stroll and
remember Elaine's memory and the work she did on strolls of the past," Hafliger said. "And give as much as you can for Mother's memorabilia to help some student get started in a career in nursing or the arts."
