Big Sandy Cultural Fund sends Greetings

Happy Christmas from the Big Sandy Cultural and Curiosity Center.

We had very successful summer arts workshops thanks to Roberta Edwards, Jessica Jaramillo, Dolly Pursley, Carol Smith, Donna Jenkins and Kelly Owen. Soon with funding we’ll be able to install a heating system in the former S&J grocery store so we can finish renovations and operate year round.

For years, Big Sandy folks wanted to have a boys and girls club, and with our plans for an after-school program we’ll have our version complete with a research library, more workshops and after years without a movie theater, we’ll be able to show movies.

As the year ends, some people may need tax deductions, and we hope you’ll consider donating to help us build on what we’ve begun. Donations to the Big Sandy Cultural Fund are tax-deductible. Any contributions will really be appreciated. Our goal is to raise $50,000, part of it for operating expenses.

In addition, we want to acquire a Grand Piano for the community so professional musicians like Phil Aaberg can visit and give concerts and workshops. The students of our piano teachers can be inspired by using the piano for recitals, and local musicians can give programs or just come in and play for the fun of it. Other small towns have Grand Pianos, and Big Sandy should have one, too.

I’ll be happy to meet with anyone to discuss our project and its future contributions to the community. Once we have the heating system installed, we’ll have a Grand Opening.

In the meantime, feel free to contact me for any reason. And do consider jumping in to help financially or to participate once we’re up and running. The Cultural Center project has attracted considerable attention, and it will give a big boost to community spirit.
