Pioneers begin second half of conference schedule, fall to Fort Benton, Chinook

The second half of the District 9C schedule got underway this past weekend. The Pioneer girls and boys varsity basketball teams faced the Longhorns in Fort Benton on Friday and hosted the Chinook Sugarbeeters on Saturday.

Big Sandy suffered losses earlier in the season against both teams and this past weekend were unable to turn the tables in the rematch.

Friday the girls couldn't keep up with the Longhorns from the outset and were defeated 65-12. Sophomore Lainey Gregory scored 8 in the contest.

Saturday junior Jaylyn Cline scored eight in a 41-20 setback to Chinook. The Pioneers closed to within seven at 21-14 in the third but a 9-0 Chinook run put the game out of reach.

In the boys contest Friday the Pioneers played the Longhorns tough. After a low start Big Sandy matched Fort Benton basket for basket before falling 62-46.

Head coach Thomas Dilworth liked the effort he saw on the court against the Longhorns. "The boys played a great game, we started slow but hung with them the rest of the game. Clint Darlington played an outstanding game for us."

Saturday the Pioneers faced the top seeded Sugarbeeters, and played hard but were unable to keep up falling 71-27.

Sophomore Ryan Roth led the Pioneers with nine points, all coming from beyond the arc.
