Pioneer Track team qualifies 15 for Divisional

The Big Sandy Pioneer Track Team competed Wednesday, may 9 at the District 9C track meet. The Lady Pioneers brought home fourth place honors, scoring 37 points and the Pioneers placed 5th, scoring 51 points. Overall, 15 of the 19 athletes qualified to advance to the divisional meet.

Notable performances on the girls side were shown by Jessica Roth, who ran in her last meet as a Lady Pioneer. She placed 2nd in the 3200 M run and 4th in the 1600 M run. She will miss the divisional meet as she will be representing Montana at the International Science Fair in Pittsburg. Advancing to the divisional meet in Great Falls are the 4x100 relay team (Bailey Gasvoda, Grace Finke, Amanda Cline, and Seanna Demontiney) who placed 3rd and the 4x400 relay team (Finke, Abriana Blanton, Cline and Demontiney) who also placed 3rd. Bringing home fourth place finishes were Bailey Gasvoda in the 100 M hurdles and Abriana Blanton in the 300M hurdles. 5th place finishers were Seanna Demontiney in the 400M and Noelle Beirwagen in the 1600M.

The boys distance runners had a strong showing on Wednesday as well. Ryan Roth placed 2nd in the 3200M, while cutting 42 seconds off his previous best time. He also placed 6th in the 1600M. Jeremiah Genereux also achived personal best times in both the 3200M (3rd place) and the 1600M (4th place). Cam Schwarzbach ran a personal best time in his fourth place finish in the 800M. The throwing events saw several Pioneer placers, as Kade Strutz placed 3rd with his personal best throw and Brock Proulx placed 5th in the discus. Parker Proulx achieved a personal best record in his 3rd place in the javelin. Clint Darlington earned his way to the divisional meet, placing 4th in the triple jump. The 4x100 relay (Strutz, Brady Pleninger, C. Schwarzbach, and P. Proulx) placed 4th and 4x400 relay team (Strutz, Pleninger, C. Schwarzbach, and P. Proulx) qualified in 3rd place.

Qualification for the divisional meet has changed in the last few years, with the consolidations of the Northern Division into three districts from its previous four. Twenty athletes still competed at the divisional meet; the top 5 placers at each of the three districts meets and the next 5 best times/throws from non-qualifying athletes during the regular season. The Pioneers expect to qualify in a handful more events based upon performance during their frantic two-week regular season.

The divisional meet will be held at Memorial Stadium in Great Falls on Thursday, May 17th. Field events begin at 9:30, with running events starting at 10:00 a.m.
