Big Sandy Cultural Fund begins Summer Programs

The Big Sandy Cultural Center will soon begin its second summer of workshops including art, performing (acting, singing, playing instruments), public speaking, creative writing and other activities.

The project under Doug Giebel’s direction has recently received grants and donations from Big Sandy Rotary, Lippard-Clawiter Foundation, Art4Moore Foundation of San Francisco, Montana Arts Council, The Montana History Foundation, Epson, Silver Ticket, Independence Bank, Blick Art Supplies, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Fuddrucker’s and Howard’s Pizza of Great Falls and others.

“We’re really honored to have created so much interest and support. This summer I plan to add performing, possibly a variety show, and our programs are for all ages, adults as well as students. It was great to have Rotary members visit to see what we’re doing with the former S&J Grocery Store next to the Bear Paw Coffee Shop and Deli.”

Recently a visitor from the Montana Department of Commerce stopped by, and the Cultural Center will also soon function as a local Visitor’s Center with its ideal location beside busy U.S. Highway 87. “ We hope tourists will stop in, visit the Historical Society and businesses as they pick up maps and other information,” said Giebel.

Soon the entire archive of Big Sandy Mountaineers from 1911 to 1957 will be digitized and online as part of the Montana Historical Society’s newspaper project. All the issues are searchable, and access is free of charge.
