The Big Sandy Library is celebrating its 2nd year in the new building! The event, “I love My Library”, is aptly named. Friends of the Library are currently raffling off a beautiful quilt, and the winner will be chosen on February 14th after the festivities. You don’t need to be present to win. But they would like everyone to stop in and have fun at the party. There will be opportunities to make Valentine Day cards. Only the supplies will be available and you will be responsible for creating your own. Children are welcome but parents would need to be present to help them. It’s a make it yourself opportunity. Or just stop in for cookies and refreshments!
The definition from Dolly Parton’s web site says, “Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is a book gifting program that mails free, high-quality books to children from birth until they begin school, no matter their family’s income.” She launched the program in 1995. At first it was just in Tennessee where Dolly was from however, in 2000 it became a national program and by 2003 Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library had mailed one million books. In 2006, she started mailing them to Canada, then England in 2007, and Australia in 2013.
Together, Dolly Parton and her book gifting organization have received honors and awards for their dedication to enriching the lives of children everywhere. She has received The Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval, Best Practices award from the Library of Congress Literacy Awards and recognition in Reading Psychology. So, you know the books are high quality books.
Her goal is to help children keep dreaming, and nothing does that better than books.
Darlene Cline said all you have to do to receive the free books is to contact her with the child’s birthdate, address, parent’s name and your child’s name. Babies to five years of age are eligible to receive the books. Every child can be registered. It is not a one child per family program.
