Grant awarded to Worrall for youth Basketball

Calista Worrall 6th grade teacher was recently notified that her funding request at DonorsChoose.org was funded. This is the second time she had applied for funding through the organization both last year and this year it was to help with supplies for the 5th and 6th grade basketball program.

This grant needs to be used for a non-school program, which the grade school basketball is. All grade school basketball games are not supported financially by the school. It is a grant that is supported by donors from Anonymous Missoula, Mt; Donna Lane from California, and Roger Helmer Anchorage AK. At that point Dick’s Sporting Goods Sports match the funds allowing Big Sandy to support what Calista called “Picking Teams” She wrote the same grant last year and she received enough funding for eight basketballs. This year the funding will allow them to buy 11 basketballs, and different colors jersey enough for the children to easily see their team members.

Coaching the girls this year will be Jamie Worrall with help from Serena Cator. Coaching the boys will be Thomas Dilworth.

The fourth-grade class will be joining the fifth and sixth grade classes this year which will allow them to field enough players. There is a little more money left and after they start practicing they will be buying whatever the coaches need. The only stipulation is that it needs to be found at Dick’s Sporting Goods.

“We start practice next Monday and we get to practice every night after school,” a fourth grader said. “It’s like real basketball!”

Calista said DonorChoose.org also has grants teachers can use for classroom projects she has used it for her classroom projects as well over the years.
