The Grinch's sleigh was a simple wooden snow sleigh. The only thing that made it unique was the size of the load it carried.
Sleighs have always been a part of the Christmas décor. This year the sled was chosen as the one item crafters in the area could decorate and auction off to help raise funds for next year's Christmas Stroll. There are ten sleighs, some made from wood, from metal, and woven material. Every sled has been picked up and is being decorated waiting for the big Christmas Bazaar Saturday, December 7th.
According to the book How the Grinch Stole Christmas, by Dr. Suess, "it was quarter past dawn. All the Whoes, still a-bed. All the Whoes, still a-snooze, when he packed up his sled." The Grinch stole every present, every tree, every Christmasy thing.
I found on a Dr. Suess website the following essay. "If the Grinch's suit reflected his transformation, then his bag and sled revealed an entirely different aspect of the holiday season.
The Grinch's bag and sled represent the actions of taking and giving. The Grinch originally uses these objects to steal from the Whos. He coasts through Who-ville all thief-in-the-night-like and fills his bag and sled with all of their goodies, determined to push them all over the edge of Mt. Crumpit. With that sled and that bag, he's the anti-Santa.
But then, at the very last moment, the bag and sled come to represent the exact opposite of taking away. He uses the sled to roll down Mt. Crumpit and return to Who-ville. And as he empties his bag, he gives back all of the things that he stole from the Whos, single-handedly restoring the holiday tradition of generosity."
So, it is only right; we have the sleigh represent the generosity of the residents of Big Sandy. The auction will allow everyone to bid their pre-determined limit and support the joy of our community.
I also remember a different memory, a song, about a sleigh. "Dashing through the snow on a one-horse open sleigh o'er the fields we go laughing all the way. Bells on bobtail ring making spirits bright oh what fun to ride and sing a sleighing song tonight." May the holiday seasons be full of laughter.
