For the second year, the Sunshine Snippers 4-H club has chosen a project to help children in the area. They put a Christmas tree up at the grade school and decorated it with stocking hats, mittens, and gloves. This year they added a second tree at the Big Sandy Library.
Interviewing children is difficult. I tried to visit with them, at the Christmas Stroll, while they were sitting wrapping presents for donations. They all said the same thing. "We wanted to help kids who didn't have anything."
Four elementary teachers were standing there visiting, and one overheard my conversation with the 4-H kids. So, she came over to help. "We appreciate the mitten tree. It helps so much. Whenever any of my students come without gloves or a hat, I can take them down there and get them one. It's wonderful!" said Amy Terry, a second-grade teacher.
Last year's mitten tree was a huge success and didn't last very long. The teachers like having warm clothes they can help dress their students with. No one has to go outside without a hat or mitten this year. Heather Wolery, Principal, informed me no child goes outside if it is zero. That means if it's a zero temperature or a zero because of the wind chill. Having said that, it's cold out without head or hand gear. Nice project Sunshine Snippers.
It was fun, because we got to work together. So the little kids won't freeze.
