Editor's Note: I am inspired by the art of our students, and have asked Monika Winderl, Big Sandy art teacher, to give me a few of her students so I can present their art in the paper. I'll continue to do so until the end of school year, whenever I have a color page to show case their work.
Kassidy Pursley is a junior at Big Sandy High School. She doesn't have a name for her picture. "I haven't really named it yet." She saw a really cool picture that inspired her, but she changed it a lot. "I really like peachy color lilies, and the blue is just for contrast."
"My art is 100% me. I'm going to do what I want to do, and I don't want to do...." Kassidy's entire family does art. "But, actually it was my grandfather who inspired me." Duke Pursley is her biggest fan. She even drew a picture of him for his birthday, "because he really likes to see my artwork." Kassidy said, "even the little sketches I do on napkins at restaurant. He insists on keeping them, and then they show up framed."
"It's my side thing, but I can see myself doing art in the future." We talked about the value of art. How it brings beauty and peace to the lives of artists.
Amanda Cline is a senior at Big Sandy High School. When I asked her the name of her art work, she smiled, shrugged and said, "Moose". When I asked her about art she said she, "loved it a lot! It's the one class I'm actually good at it."
Amanda choose a water color in blue's and browns for me to highlight in the paper. It's subtler than the Lady in the Mirror a study of Picasso which is on display at the Mountaineer. That is full of dramatic color. "I like the neutral colors. I loved the colors together." Her favorite subject to draw is nature. Amanda draws a lot of flowers or animals, and is good at drawing trees.
She hasn't thought about taking any art in college because she doesn't think she is good enough. She's more drawn to realistic looking art, which might be why she doesn't think she is good enough. Although, she will be going to Bozeman this fall, she has no idea at this time what she would like to major in.
I can see this picture, "Moose", framed and on display in somebody's house. It's that good!
