Much like the rest of this community, I have been following the news of all things related to COVID-19 closely. It has left me feeling scared for loved ones in larger cities and anxious for the near future, but overall it has left me with a heavy heart for those that are currently affected. I am blessed to say that I have not been directly affected too much. Aside from a few of my weekly meetings and my daughter’s preschool getting canceled, I find myself living by my same winter routine with limited outings.
The world of travel, however, has been dramatically affected by this pandemic. With international travel being suspended and other nations closing their borders, I recently found myself helping multiple friends get back home to the U.S. to avoid getting quarantined in other countries. Likewise, I was forced to cancel a trip to Europe that I had been highly anticipating for a couple of years now! My friends and I felt that it was best to postpone our travel to Budapest and Vienna in case the health conditions had not yet improved by the fall. Although the situation looks grim, I remain hopeful. The world has endured a great many catastrophes throughout the years. It has survived world wars, as well as other conflicts, numerous natural disasters, and multiple health outbreaks. What I have found is that people are resilient! Before talk of the Coronavirus, people asked me if I was scared to travel because of the impending terrorist attacks throughout the globe? I would always answer the same way; there is just as much imminent danger at home as there is abroad! At home, there is a higher probability of a car accident occurring than being caught up in a terrorist attack. Bottom line-I do not like to let fear dictate my life!
What I have found in my travels is the true beauty of people. I’ve seen it in their kind greetings and their patience as I navigate a foreign city or language. I’ve witnessed it as I laid eyes on the art and architecture of incredible artists and craftsmen. I’ve experienced it in listening to local music and tasting native cuisine. I have found far more similarities in cultures than differences. In short, traveling helps me appreciate the true beauty of it all, that is the bounty and greatness of God!
Moreover, I believe in the goodness and mercy of God. Just as the world has recovered from atrocities in the past, I believe it will heal. Although I am not sure of when exactly that will be, I look forward to the day when I can board my next international flight with my family to share in the exquisite sights of civilizations past and indulge in the delicious local fare!
