The Lifeguard Family

The few months of quarantine and social distancing have seemed like forever. Luckily as long as everyone stays healthy and safe, opening of businesses and normal activities are allowed! The Big Sandy pool will be open this Monday, June 1st, and the lifeguard family is very excited. There are many lifeguards working at the pool this year and they are all ready to get back to the pool.

The age of the lifeguards at the pool range from fifteen to nineteen. All the lifeguards are professional and take their job seriously, as well as having fun and enjoying their time at work. Each lifeguard is CPR certified and Basic First Aid certified by Leslie Gregory. There are three new coming lifeguards this year that are both nervous and excited to start their new job. They all went through training last weekend and learned the ropes of the pool. The first year can make a person nervous but they all learn to enjoy the job and fall in love with the sunny days. A few of the recently graduated seniors have been working at the pool for three summers now. This year will be their fourth year working here, so they have lots to say about the job. One lifeguard talked about how it’s tradition to sing “closing time” when they’re closing down the pool. She said it’s a small part of the job but it’s a fun part.

Another lifeguard explained how she loves seeing all the people come and enjoy their time in the sunshine and enjoys getting an easy tan. The older lifeguards love having familiarity at the pool and enjoy working with their friends. The newer lifeguards all know the older lifeguards, so they are excited to join the group. Some of the older lifeguards talked about loving the rainy days when the pool is slow because then they can be goofy and even swim in the pool until people arrive. All the lifeguards enjoy their boss and feel like they are paid well. Working at the pool is a great summer job for the Big Sandy teens and a great opportunity to learn responsibilities and get some sunshine during the summer. So please come on down to the pool for a swim or just to tan! Then you can meet our goofy, fun, and responsible lifeguards!
