What's Happening at the Hospital?

Fall is upon us and, with the changing colors in the trees, come changes at BSMC. You know what they say...life is about change. Nothing ever stays the same!

Among some of the changes happening at the Medical Center, the Social Services Director, Lisa Genereux,, RN, and the MDS Coordinator, Pam Gasvoda, have moved to an office upstairs. They are now where the hospital waiting room used to be. The waiting room has been added to the outpatient room. This move allows for ease of access to these two ladies, as they are a vital part of the healthcare team. The office that Lisa and Pam shared downstairs is now where Colette Terry, CFO, resides. She is also managing all Human Resources matters for the facility; so her own office allows for better privacy. This move also allows space for the newest addition to the Business Office Team. Robin Colyer has accepted the position of Accounts Receivable Clerk that will be shared with Brandy Terry. Robin currently works as a CNA at the Medical Center and will start this new venture in October. The facility is blessed with such versatile staff!

There has been more painting happening too. The stairs as railing to the basement got a fresh coat; and the "Business Center" upstairs between the Clinic and Nurses' Station is now a lovely shade of blue. The downstairs offices and hall have received a makeover too! The paint colors are the same used in the Clinic and Long Term Care halls. Most was originally donated; only a few extra gallons were purchased! Staff did the painting; so all-in-all, it was a low-cost project that makes a huge impact!

BSMC is continuing to navigate the Coronavirus Pandemic. All staff continue to wear masks when performing any patient care and patients over age 5 entering the building are asked to wear one too. We continue to provide scheduled visits with the residents as long as there is a 6-foot separation and masks are worn. Staff are still working on a suitable plan for visits with inclement weather. Window visits are permitted any time; and, of course, you can continue to send cards and letters to the residents via mail.

Lisa Sipler, CNA/Activities Director, continues to do a great job keeping the residents busy. Pioneer sports have been broadcasted when available. Intense games of trivia, Bingo, Gotcha, and Balloon Volleyball have been played. Ice cream socials are a weekly occurrence. The Annual Circus was held in August. Everyone had a good time with that! Two special birthdays were celebrated in September, along with special treats for Grandparents' Day. If you'd like to follow the daily activities for the residents, please "Like" the Big Sandy Medical Center Facebook Page.

It is also time to start thinking about flu season. Please note that the symptoms for Influenza can mimic the symptoms for Coronavirus. As you certainly have been doing for months now, please remember to wash your hands often and cover your cough. Stay home if you don't feel well and remember that you are always welcome to be evaluated in our Clinic or Emergency Department. We just ask that you call first. Flu shots will be available soon! You will be notified as soon as you're able to receive one.

The Medical Center is hiring! If you're interested in an application, please visit our website, call Colette at 378-2188 option 4, or stop in for an application. Currently, the following full-time positions are available; CNA-day shift, RN- day or night shift, Lab Manager, and Dietary along with part-time Housekeeping. Come join our team!

As always, thank you for being the heart of BSMC.
