The Rotary's Annual Easter Egg Hunt Resumes

The Big Sandy Rotary Club will be hosting its annual Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, April 3rd at 11 AM sharp. The event will take place at the Big Sandy Airport. The event is open to children who are old enough to walk and collect candy, toys, and eggs through 5th grade. The Easter Egg Hunt has been hosted by the Rotary Club for around 60 years.

The kids will be divided into five groups by age and assigned to a specific area of the airfield, where candy, small toys, and a few special plastic eggs with money inside, will be spread out throughout the area. At 11:00, the fire siren will sound, signaling the kids to rush out and collect their candy and prizes. As Jodi Thornton, one of the event organizers this year, puts it, "They clean it all up in about 3 or 4 minutes."

The Easter Bunny will be present to greet children and take pictures with the kids. At this point, the Rotary hasn't decided who will be playing the bunny. The honor has fallen to Hunter Moore in years past, though he has now grown taller than the 5'8 that is the maximum height for the costume.

After the Easter Egg Hunt, the Big Sandy Swim team will be selling lunch as a fundraiser. They will be offering pulled pork sandwiches, baked beans, chips, and a dessert.

Last year's event was cancelled due to the Covid lockdowns, which was the first time in recent memory the event wasn't held for the children of Big Sandy. Jodi explained the Rotary's reasoning for holding the event this year: "This year, we figured that because the kids have been in school the whole time, and they have their own groups, and they know how to social distance at this point in time, there should be no problem with it. If someone has a problem with it then they can have their children wear masks or just not bring them."

There is no expectation of bad weather interrupting the event. Wind typically is the biggest weather concern, though several years ago a snow storm forced the organizers to move the event to City Hall, where candy was handed out instead of the more traditional running and collecting.

Anyone with questions about the Easter Egg Hunt can contact Jodi Thornton or Sheri Moore.
