How the Hopp Community got its name

I live at Hopp. Out southeast of Big Sandy, many communities are still going by the names they were given years ago. I live in one such community. The Hopp Post office wasn't too far from where I live now. I thought maybe some would be interested in what I found while I was doing some history research. Most who still live in the Hopp community indeed have long family history in the area and already know the following: (Taken from A Gathering of Memories)

"W.M. (Bill) Hopp was born on March 3, 1872. He farmed for a few years at West Prairie, Wisconsin, and later moved to Minneapolis, where he married Helen Fortun. In 1913 he homesteaded southeast of Big Sandy. Here he established the Post Office and was postmaster for about 11 years. This area was named after him and is still known as the Hopp Community."

"In 1926, he moved to Big Sandy, where he resided until his wife passed away in 1933. She was an invalid for many years, and many friends have commented on how faithfully he mistered to her needs."

"He spent some time in Olympia, Washington, where he worked in a logging camp, but in the 40's he returned to operate the Judith Ferry on the Missouri River. His later years were spent in the Big Sandy area, finally in the Sande Rest Home."

"Bill passed away on August 8, 1969, at the age of 97."
