Big Sandy Church of God held its 100th Birthday and 10th annual Brisket Cook-Off on Sunday, October 10th. The worship service was particularly well attended. The church used the occasion to baptize 9 young people. A 30-minute video created by Craig Edwards was shown throughout the afternoon commemorating the century of history. Photos of events, families, and landmark moments in the church’s history were featured. Roberta Edwards decorated the church with photos throughout the years, including a name-those-people type contest. Throughout the afternoon, visitors stopped to survey and discuss the photographs of years gone by. Guests enjoyed 3 birthday cakes made by Ann Bitz.
The Brisket Cook-Off featured 10 competitors this year. The overall winner was Tyce Bahnmiller, who has claimed first place several times in the preceding years. Second place was awarded to Chase Hoffman, who has also placed in years past. Third went to Mark Potter. A side bet between Pastor Erik Sietsema and Lance Rutledge resulted in Lance emerging victorious. The bet itself was a continuation of a traditional contest between Erik Sietsema and Brook Anderson, with the loser having to wear a flowery apron every time he grills for the year following the competition. Briskets for this year’s contest were donated by ranchers from the surrounding area. The first place winner received a plaque and a $50 gift card generously donated by Roadhouse Diner in Great Falls. Second and Third place winners also received plaques and various items donated by the Williams Farm as well as soaps donated by LeaAnn Williams.
After the meal, guests visited and played games, while kids enjoyed the Bounce House (generously provided by Bounce on In in Havre). Pastor Erik Sietsema (me) and Jeramie Erie took turns sitting in the very popular dunk tank. With 50 degree weather and strong winds, the experience was invigorating for Erik and Jeramie.
Big Sandy Church of God is looking forward to another 100 years in our little town. We would also like to express our gratitude to everyone who came out to celebrate with us, those who helped make the event happen, people who donated their time and effort to the event, and everyone who has been a part of our church family in the last century.
