Big Sandy School Board Schedule discussion for public access to the gym

The latest Big Sandy School Board meeting was short. I attended by Google Meet. Superintendent Kelly Haaland mentioned that the gym floor would be touched-up again with a water-based finish during Christmas break. We also have a few electrical issues going on.

He also mentioned that the new COVID variant is not going away soon.

The evaluation tool for the Superintendent, the Principal, and the Financial Clerk has been chosen. They like the 14-page evaluation better than the two-page one because it covers more areas. They have been looking at forms at the evaluation types and determining which they want to use. Evaluations need to be done, by law, once a year. This evaluation will be for this school year.

The Negotiation meeting between teachers and the school board was set for Feb 4. Kelly Rutledge, Brad Weaver, and Anna Bold will represent the school board, while Melanie Schwarzbach will be representing the teachers.

The school’s Finacial Clerk, Maryetta Engle, said the school audit would be on Jan 3.

Principle Heather Wolrey’s report mentioned that Santa had flown into Big Sandy and brought gifts to every student. She also said that semester tests are scheduled.

Kelly Haaland mentioned that OPI Superintendent is requiring a review of the Civil rights of all the students.

A discussion was held on how to supply school door fobs to the public. There was some discussion about people not wearing appropriate shoes in the gym. Access to the gym will be on the agenda at the next school board meeting.

Athletic Director Melanie Schwarzbach reported about the Denton fundraisers. After Paying the referees for the basketball game, which is $800 for one night. The 4-H raffle brought in $780 plus the $250 donation from the Sunshine Snippers 4-H club. The 50-50 total came to $220; Josh Danreuther won and donated his $110 back. Gate proceeds, after paying referees, was $1,116.84. This was over a $2,000 event. They asked Denton Athletic Director where to send money. The Denton FFA program will disperse the funds.

Concerning Pioneer sports, she also mentioned that both boys’ and girls’ basketballs teams are exciting to watch. Wrestling has two injured athletics. Little Kids Pioneer wrestling is back at the school. The wrestling mats were a positive purchase.

She mentioned that elementary kids belong in the gym during the basketball games. She will be monitoring the grade school children.
