Some Highlights of 1996 (25 Years Ago)

*Lisa and Darin Genereux’s Prairie Essence Bakery opened in Big Sandy. *Ron Otto and Carmen Sibra placed first and second in the 246 contestant Matthew Quigley Long Range “Buffalo Shoot” in Forsyth. *Former Big Sandy cage prep star Marietta Bahnmiller was named 1995 Class C Coach of the Year. *Don Kidd placed fifth at the Northern ABC Divisional Speech Tournament. *Mike and Annette Bratz announced that they had purchased S & J IGA from Stan and Jan Holmquist. *Eighth grader Ross Runnion won the Chouteau County Spelling Bee and finished thirteenth at the Montana State Spelling Classic. *Jennifer Curl was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Chinook Invitational Only Classic. *Jerame Ostrom and Max Nelson captured honors at the MSU-Northern Hi Line Regional Science and Engineering Fair. *Natalie Davidson and Doug Richter were selected as prom royalty. *Jaida Mangold and Diana Upham were selected to attend Montana American Legion Auxilary Girls State, while Lesa Pribyl and Meghann Butler were named alternates. *The Lady Pioneers won the District 9C Track Meet and brought home second place honors from the Montana track and field meet in Missoula. *Dianna Webster was named new branch manager of Norwest Bank of Big Sandy. *Owner Janis Kaste announced plans to close longtime Big Sandy clothing facility, Kaste’s Dept. Store. *Big Sandy Ace punter/running back Dan DesRosier was named to the Montana Class C All-State Football Team. *Rusty Sparks and Ron Cortese netted a 9.25 northern to win the Fresno Chapter of Walleyes Unlimited “Northern Roundup” largest fish competition. Ron Pribyl, Craig Korband, and Pete Gasvoda captured team honors with a total of 45 northerns. *Work on the new gym floor was completed in September. *Over 300 Express Pipeline employees began arriving in Big Sandy to work on the 785 mile pipeline.
