Dear Editor,
I’m writing concerning the article on the front page of the March 2, 2022, edition of the Mountaineer about the Big Sandy Senior Citizen Board seriously considering closing the Big Sandy Senior Center. Like they stated, “closing the Senior Center would be a terrible loss and will continue to look at options.
May I respectfully suggest one option may be to encourage people giving memorial donations to a charity of the donor’s choice, to consider giving to the Senior Center.
Not only is the Senior Center practically a life line for many of our Seniors, of whom some may be on fixed incomes, providing affordable meals, but a great help to many of our young local farmers and ranchers who are too busy and too sleep-deprived to cook, and simply can’t afford restaurants ever day with current economy they are dealing with. The Center also provides social interactions for the thirty or more men and women who regularly are morning coffee drinkers.
The Senior Center also provides many activities that the public may participate in. On a personal note, when my elderly father, Frank Magda lived with me for the final four months of his life, the Center was his life. We’d go there for. Lunch every week day. He would stay and play cards until he was tired, then call me to come get him.
I would also ike to commend Crystal Geyer for being so accommodating. She remembers how you like your food, serves the amount each person wants and which courses they choose. She is always joyful, positive, friendly, and helpful.
A Senior center is a must for every town.
Very Sincerely,
Barb Ophus
Big Sandy, MT
