Miss Kandi Marino stopped by the Mountaineer. She wanted to give an update "to my people." Kandi is currently on the organ wait list for a kidney. She said, "Isn't that sad. I had insurance, but I had to wait till I had money (before they would put her on a list." Each month Kandi gives blood to see where she is and how it affects her match for a kidney.
Her kidney four years ago was at 8 %, and four years later, it is currently functioning at 12%. Kandi's kidneys would be further damaged by dialysis, therefore not an option.
She wants everyone to know she is trying very hard to stay healthy. Kandi is eating right and doing as much as possible to protect her organs. Kandi does get a shot once a month to help her red blood cells, helping keep her kidneys working.
Kandi said she still feels guilty but knows that everyone gave the money to help her, so when she goes to the doctor, Kandi does use the benefit money for gas.
Kandi wants everyone to know if for some reason, her kidney function goes up to a healthy level, and she doesn't use the money for a kidney transplant, the funds will go to the Big Sandy Highschool for scholarships.
