Soccer Season Fast Approaching

With summer and harvest in full swing, it is hard to even realize that school and fall sports will soon be upon us. However, adding a pair of shin guards to your back-to-school list might help you avoid the last-minute drive to the store. The soccer program has been a very successful program over the years boasting well over 60 kids returning each year. The season runs through October ideally ending before the weather becomes unbearable for outside sports. While soccer claims international sovereignty in the sports world, it often times flies under the radar in the U.S. As far as Big Sandy kids, if they do not already love it, soccer can be a great way to get into shape for other sports. Soccer greatly increases a person’s aerobic capacity and cardiovascular health as kids must shift between running, walking, and sprinting. Their muscle and bone strength improve as they build flexibility and endurance. A U12 soccer player will work up to play a 60-minute game. Sometimes, asking a small child to run for even 30 seconds is a challenge. There are other benefits besides physical as well. Despite the obvious ones of teamwork and sharing, there are more vague ones such as “thinking (literally) on the run”, being aware of your spatial surroundings and who is in them, and confidence building. Big Sandy has worked very hard over the years to create a program where kids can begin to learn the game in U6, transition to a more competitive feel in U8, and work up to the serious playing level at U12. Come join us this fall either as a player or a spectator! Sign-ups are available online on the Facebook page @bigsandydoccerleague are at the fields on August 23 at 4:00 pm.
