The Big Sandy Pioneers placed five wrestlers in Glasgow this past weekend. The Scottie Invitational is one of the biggest tournaments that the team will compete in this season. Teams from all over the central and eastern part of the state were there to battle it out on the mats. Perennial powerhouse Sidney was present as well as other tough teams from around the region.
8th grader Quinn Rodewald competed well in his first high school tournament. The Pioneer 103 pound wrestler went 3-2 en route to a 4th place finish. Fellow 8th grader Harley LaBuda Finished 5-2 on the weekend, placing 3rd in the 107 pound girls division. The two wrestlers proved that 8th graders can compete well on the high school stage.
Freshman Leah LePinnet placed 4th in the girls 114 pound weight class and was able to score a takedown against the eventual champion of her bracket. Junior Sam Cox performed well coming in 6th place after beating grapplers from Forsyth and Roundup in the 205 pound division. His victory against Rylee Wiggins of Forsyth came in sudden victory, winning 6-4. Sophomore Darrell Sunchild finished in 5th place going 3-2 on the weekend at heavyweight. Sunchild was able to pin his opponent Gavin Schmele of Fort Benton in the 5th place match.
Wes Cox (132lbs) finished 2-2 on the weekend and Tannin Bauman (138lbs) finished 2-3 on the weekend. Both wrestlers faced tough competition and look to learn from their experience. Big Sandy will be competing again this Thursday in Fort Benton and at the Holiday Classic in Great Falls over the weekend.
