Country and Community-Honoring the Memory of George Rice

Please join us in honoring George Rice at the high school auditorium on Memorial Day, Monday, May 29th, 2023.

Immediately following the Memorial Day parade, American Legion, Post 50 will be recognizing George's unwavering commitment not only to the American Legion but his country and community.

George proudly served his country in the United States Army, from 1952 to 1954 with a tour of duty during the Korean War conflict. He was drafted in 1952 and sent to Fort Lewis, Washington for basic training. Rice was trained as a small engine power maintenance mechanic in San Louis Obispo, California and then sent to Fort Hood, Texas where he volunteered to go overseas. George's primary duty station was Japan.

Upon his return, George selflessly served the Big Sandy community and surrounding area for over 60 years. He worked at the local grain elevator for 40 years while serving in various roles such as EMT, Hunter's Safety Educator, Stock Inspector, school bus driver, Boy Scout leader and volunteer firefighter. George was also instrumental in keeping American Legion, Post 50 active and thriving. He served as the local Post Commander for decades and served as the District and Department Commander during his tenure.

George had a profound and positive impact on the lives of many and we are forever grateful for his commitment to country and community.

George's dedication plaque and service uniforms will be on display at the Big Sandy Historical Society Museum.
